Does anyone know a connection for popcorn ceiling removal? My neighbor had hers done by a small hispanic group a couple years back but she is unable to get in contact with them now, too bad because they had her 1800 sq ft house scraped and retextured in one day.
I would like to have the same done with our house and I also have a few air vents that need to be removed and drywalled over. Thanks.

Remember this......popcorn ceilings are ALSO not just an interior decor item.....they hide a multitude of construction sins....i.e. lousy taping and board hanging jobs....

When I lived in Gnu Jesey. I gained an appreciation for popcorn that goes beyond the movies....I had moved from Las Vegas to Atlantic City....bought a house there....NOOOO popcorn....sitting in the living room the night we closed and moved in.

Looked up....and counted 15 sheets of drywall on the vaulted ceiling.....every single one of them.... wallboard paper has a texture.....wallboard tape and mud does not....the paint was a washable semigloss and it showed every single piece of board.

OH and it ALSO showed the the board was not lapped....it was installed with all joints lined up perfectly................

Also bear in mind that the popcorn used in older homes contained asbestos, so scraping it off can be extremely hazardous. It was banned from being used in the manufacture of the texture material in 1978, but continued to be installed until the old material ran out- into the '80's in some cases. If your house is older, you better have it tested.

Have you thought of doing it yourself? There is a video on HGTV.com showing how to do it. My husband did the guest room, making sure that he got the ceiling VERY wet and it was finished within an hour.

Please do make sure that the ceiling was put up after the 1950's for safetys sake.

There is a very nice tool shown on the about video (17.00 at Home Depot) which came in VERY handy. A regular white kitchen bag attaches to it and all the the popcorn falls into the bag and saves a LOT of mess.

I might mention that our ceiling had previously been painted before it was testured and therefore when we took it off all we had to do was repaint it!!! Looks beautiful!!

There is an outfit called Dr.Drywall or such who features popcorn removal. A client used them and was happy. I have had no personal experience.

I did the same thing as your neighbor in CA 20 years ago and it came out very well in a day.

I suspect any of the regular drywall crews can do it but I don't know one at the moment.

Thanks for all the info. Our house was built in 88, so as far as asbestos goes, were ok.

I had a couple outfits come give me estimates today, one very expensive and one with a great price.

The neighbor across the street lucked out when she had hers done, because not only was it scraped and textured in one day but it only ran her 900 bucks! I cant get anyone to come close to that.
