I called USPS today about forwarding mail if you have a secondary or vacation home. He said you have to do a temporary forward and have to do it every 6 months It sure would be nice to have a forward that is done in perpetuity. That is just a pain in the a@#@#@ What do other people with second/vacation homes do?

You know you can submit the mail forward online, don't you? You just have to let the Post Office charge $1 to a credit card to prove your identity.

Other than junk mail, what gets delivered to your vacation home? The only reason I even bothered to hold my mail when I was gone was so I could be sure to get Bed Bath and Beyond coupons. Any bill for the Las Vegas house that isn't paperless gets sent to my home in California.

But OP wants all mails (including bills) go to the second home in LV, so he can pretend he lives in LV while in California.

I have moved twice since living in Vegas.
First time I forwarded my mail online and paid $1. Result....I never got any mail forwarded except the letter from the post office stating that the forward went through. My old post office put the blame on the new post office.
2nd time I moved, I manually put in the forwarding request. I once again got the forwarding letter saying it went through. The end result..I still NEVER got any mail forwarded. I told my current mailman the sitaution and he had me fill out another form. Still NO forwarded mail. What makes it funny, is it is the same post office for zip codes 89139 and 89178 but they still couldn't get my mail forwarded.
So I ended up losing a couple magazines, junk mail, and who knows.

My advice, DO NOT TRUST the usps to forward your mail in Las Vegas!!!!!
(No wonder that part of the US gov't lost over $8 billion in revenue in 2010)

The USPS has a weekly service. The USPS bundles all your mail & puts in in a priority mail carton & sends it to wherever you want it sent. This is NOT "temporary mail forwarding."

For what it's worth I have a virtual mailbox address with a company in California. They receive the physical mail, scan it and notify me by email. Then I can download the scanned mail at my convenience. Works like a charm.

you have a friend or relative pick up your mail every few days and mail it to you in a large priority envelope to where ever you are.

although I like that virtual mail service idea!

It's the same here. I have tenants who move, I know they put in a forwarding address, and sporadically their mail shows up at the old address. Now, I ask the new tenants to just bring it to me, I call the other tenants and let them pick it up at my office if they still live in the area! Ridiculous.
