You think it would be huge deal if I decorated the fire hydrant in my yard?

I won't obstruct it just wanting to wrap some lights around it. I certainly don't contend that I own it or anything like that just thought I'd spruce it up for the holidays.

Sounds like a cool idea if you can guarantee that you wont obstruct any of the hook up ports or access ability to the hydrant. You should probably call the fire department to check.

I wouldn't.

Water. Electricity. Just no.

Not to trying to kill the Christmas spirit, but I wouldn't do it. While I am not a city firefighter, I am a military firefighter and covering a hydrant could be considered a fire safety violation. Many hydrants are color coded to determine water flow and hydrants are painted a specific color for easy identification during night and day. Covering a hydrant with lights may make it more difficult to identify in a high stress situation. Plus, it may be a pain in the butt connecting to a hydrant when it is covered in lights. Also, water and electricity don't mix. If the lights are exposed flowing water, another fire and life safety hazard will needed to be addressed on scene.

Maybe someone who works for a city department will have another point of view, but to cover your butt, I wouldn't mess with a fire hydrant.

There are those things for which one does not ask permission. This is one.

You might carefully rig it so it come off in one piece if any needs to...few coat hangers will do it.

We had a neighbor who extensively decorated his in so. Cal. But no he did not have permission. However he did it successfully for at least 15 years. His next door neighbor was a member of the volunteer fire dept. So it was not that they did not know. They just were not about to give permission.

Don't sweat the water and all that. It is as safe as a house gutter or outside tree.

If he even has to ask, the answer is likely "no". Why risk a fine?

Never happen. Worst case some fire guy comes by and either takes it off or knocks on your door and asks you to take it off.

Wish him a merry xmas and take it off.

Tis easier to ask forgiveness then to seek permission.

Anyone else old enough to remember back in 1976 when nearly every fire hydrant was painted red, white, and blue to look like a little revolutionary war soldier for the country's bi-centennial?

Or was that only in my hometown back in Pennsylvania?
