I just happened to be at a neighbors place and I noticed that they get all the TV stations from L.A. which is where we are from because I played with the remote while my girl chatted with the lady of the house. I wanted to ask but I don't know them well. The remote said Dishnetwork on it so I assume that is the service they have but I still cannot figure out how they are getting it here because I would like to get it too. I called Dishnetwork and they said you can only get the local LV stations here but I know what I saw. Anybody have any idea how to pull this off?

local LA is only the local news(5,9,11,13, PBS, KCET), is that what you are talking about?
pretty much everything else is syndicated.

I had it for 7 or 8 years on Echostar. It is simply a matter of your card. My card was set up as if I was in an RV touring the country. So I could get both NY and LA channels. I could even watch regular shows in any time zone.

I got mine because a good friend was President of Echostar. It was very nice while it lasted. He retired and eventually my service went back to normal.

The legal way to get it is to own an RV or a big boat.

I get the LA sports channel on dish network, I also get bay area sports channels. I do not get the local LA channels for news and such.

With satellite they usually give you the local channels based on you billing address. So a couple of things...that person might have brought their card from home or have one from LA from a friend of family member. There is also a way to program the local channels from the big markets like LA, NY and Chicago if you dig deep into the options.

Have your girl ask the lady of the house how they get the channels, since you would rather ask strangers on the internet than your neighbor.

Maybe a slingbox. It runs cable from somewhere else through your internet connection. You can google it because honestly I don't know all the details. I had some friends in Costa Rica do it through relatives living in the U.S.

Their account has an LA service address. How you get that is up to you. Using a friend or relative's address who doesn't have Dish Network service works well. Using a private mail box might not work that well if Dish Network checks the address before turning on your service. You could also try establishing service with a Las Vegas service and billing address, then change your service address to an LA address after a while and switch to the Los Angeles locals. If you do this, you probably shouldn't plug your receivers into the phone line or give them Internet access, which limits you to four receivers (beyond four they want them plugged into the phone lines or accessible via the Internet to prevent account stacking).

Canadians who want to receive Dish Network use US-based address brokers, since Canadian law prohibits them from receiving USA satellite TV.

Cards and receivers are married on the Dish Network system, so your neighbors would have to be bringing the entire receiver with them from LA.

There is also something called "Distant Networks", which requires either a qualifying address or an RV exemption. Qualifying for distant networks is more work, and gives you fewer out of area stations, so I wouldn't bother trying.

Note that only NY and LA locals are available nationally, since every other DMA's local channels are now on spot beams, and can only be received if the receiver is inside or within a hundred or so miles of the DMA. LA and NY are on beams that illuminate the entire continental US.

One word: Slingbox. It's the best thing ever and there are no monthly fees. Definitely get one.
