Hey All,

My husband works in the Banking industry. Specifically the stock market. His company is hiring for a position such as his in Las Vegas. We would live in Henderson, Nevada. We have two little girls - and 8-year old and a 4 (soon to be 5)-year old.

I guess I have this idea that Las Vegas would be the LAST place anyone would want to work given its overall economy. My husband certainly doesn't want to transfer to LV and then lose his job because the economy in this city is so bad.

Listen, I live in GA. I have NO idea whether what I read and hear about is true or whether it is totally off base. Can anyone shed a little light on what may be totally untrue?

Thanks All,

Elizabeth

If your husband has a good job, why would you want to leave? Most people who live here are well aware of the issues of our city, but are taken aback when use words like toilet as a descriptor.

But to answer your question: Yes, our economy is not doing well. In 2008, when everything hit the fan, almost every industry was hit very hard. Our biggest industries, tourism, gaming, and construction were hit the hardest. Tourism and gaming seem to be on the rebound, so we are hopeful that the rest will follow, although, it does not appear that the construction industry will recover anytime soon.

I think your husband's ability to maintain employment will largely depend on the stability of his current employer.

HTH

The economy is bad as in getting a job which is nearly impossible. However, since your husband will already have a job I do not see any problems in moving here.

Default Jeez people, call off the calvary already!!!!

Jeez People,

Call off the dogs already!!

In my post, if any of the harsher ones on this crowd even read that far, I mentioned that what I heard could be a bunch of crap and that I just wanted to get a realistic opinion about Las Vegas economy. I wasn't looking to offend anyone who currently lives here.

I am just as prone to anyone in regards to what printed and news media says about a particular state. I wasn't looking to offend any of you. [mod cut-- response to deleted post]
Thanks,

Elizabeth

I have a good job. I want to leave where I am. Having a good job isn't everything or a reason to stay somewhere. Just sayin'

Thanks,

A realistic opinion from who? People that are gainfully employed? People who are unemployed? People who are under-employed? Or Steve Wynn?

Before giving you an opinion, it would probably help if you knew a little background about LV and the people who post in the LV forums. This way you understand where individuals are coming from. Las Vegas Drunk's opinion on the city will vary differently from trekwars2000's. I can definitely tell you that my opinion differs from both of theirs.

Here is a collection of everyone's opinion about the local economy. Enjoy.

I think it's a bit too much to ask a new poster to not just search the forums, but to get a feel for who the regulars are and their backgrounds and what each of the "regulars" thinks what about a certain issue. Best to simply answer the question as best one can, as with any thread in which someone comes looking for some guidance, including sorting through what they may have heard elsewhere.

Thanks for all the links, those will be helpful reading for the OP.

I'd add this one: What is good about Las Vegas?

I'd also cut the OP a little more slack. (Not directed at you in particular, MG.) Apparently, the news media outside of the southwest US portrays Las Vegas as a real-life incarnation of "Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome." (This doesn't explain our visitor numbers at all.)

But at least the latest "10 Most Miserable Cities" came out, and we weren't on it.

That thread was in there also. Good read for anyone that wants an honest opinion on whats going on in the valley. I have already referred several people at work to that thread.

Mad Max, Beyond Thunderdome sounds like a great theme for a hotel/casino.
