I'm curious as to what the construction work was in the area bordered by Desert Inn, Tenaya Way, Twain Ave, and Buffalo Dr.
I've been perusing Google Earth, and it looks like construction started sometime between 1977 and 2002. In the early 2000s, it looks like the area was somewhat terraced (particularly on the east), but work has obviously ceased. Any idea what was going to go in that area?
Thanks.

That's a mine. It has been there since at least the early 60's, maybe earlier, before there were any homes west of Rancho Road/ U.S.95. In the late 60's there was an International race track nearby ─ Formula 1, I believe ─ and nothing else over there. It was considered pretty far out of town

"Quarry" might be more accurate.

That was my first thought when I Google mapped it - a mine or quarry.

On "Quarry" as opposed to "mine"? Or something else?

You can always look up quarry in your Funk & Wagnal.

Apparently it is: LIGHT-AGGREGATE, SAND AND GRAVEL, AND DECOMPOSED GRANITE. I think it is #48 on this map. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...tcbS9BrBzzBCqw
