You are better off hiring people from the Home Depot parking lot. Movers are one of the most common scams on CL. In my experience, even well know big moving companies try to rip people off.

The most common is hostage freight taking (where they hold your belongings, as they jack up the price, you pay or they keep everything you own, HUGE scam.)

Very good video below of undercover sting of rip-off mover scu* bags,..

Why not have in writing a list of your property and the agreed upon price they agreed to move it from location A to B, then have them sign it before they even begin to do a thing? Then at the first sign of trouble call the police...

Here's the thing. When I moved I hired those movers that advertise in those small weeklies and Craigslist. They broke a bunk bed and a bunch of other stuff plus they charged my credit card twice. When I called them to refund the extra payment, they said they would not. I ended up getting a lawyer to have them return the money and within two hours after the lawyer called them they delivered the money in person to the attorney. Now, I think I will just stick with reputable moving companies even though I'll pay a little extra since they are insured and their reputation needs to be good.

Does not work that way. Civil dispute. What you could do is have six big guys show up and take your stuff back.

Or pull your AR-15 on the movers and make them unload or you will shot them for stealing your stuff. I suspect though that you may end up arrested.

Be Fun though to watch the cops try to deal with that one...if you are on your property and the moving company is stealing the stuff you have a good claim of the "Castle Clause" What you need though is to get the truck at least partially on your property.

Going U-haul with some home depot hermanos seems to make the most sense, hired the truck for Monday, thanks for the warnings. =)

I am looking for an inexpensive way to move from SoCal
To Vegas. Does Home Depot hire people to drive the trucks too?

Just assume whatever you think you are going to pay is going to cost somewhat more and you'll be fine. I have moved more times than I can count, both around Vegas and out of it and its always taken longer to load and unload than I expected and things have always weighed a lot more than expected.

If you are moving out of town this is one where you can get stung pretty badly. Most companies will charge you by the pound and put in some really low bid based on a weight you probably won't make. Negotiate the overweight charge or else is my advice. Call around a lot and make everyone work against each other unless you know very close to what your load is going to weigh. My move out had a quote for 1800 pounds and the lady who did the quote said based on what I told her I probably only had 1500-1600. Turns out it was 4200. However she originally wanted to charge me 60 cents per pound over, which I supposedly would never need. I kept asking for lower and she'd come down a penny. I was about to give up on her and get another and she said give me an hour and see what I can do. We finally agreed on 24 cents. If I didn't do that negotiation I would have owed over $1500 more than expected which would have really upset me, but with the overage my total cost was about what I would have paid with another mover who had a higher weight allowance but a bigger upfront quote.

NO, you are confused....the reference to HD is simply to their parking lot.....the part closest to the frint sidewalk so they can step out on the sidewalk [sanctuary] when the HD guys come to run them off....
