What I hate about casino buffets, where they have to get the drinks for you, half the time, the drink never comes. Or when it does, it's the wrong thing. Or the lemon is in the iced tea that I specifically asked to not be there. I am not going to tip above and beyond the tipping point for lousy service. And like Elle Tea said, it's not our fault they chose to work in an industry that pays them slave wages and they have to survive on tips.. Maybe, just maybe they should treat every person like gold, and see how many tips they get then.

I have had many different types of jobs in my life. And each one I did as well as I could, with a smile on my face, even if the job sucked. I always tried to do a perfect job all the time, and never went to work disgruntled and took it out on anyone. I worked in catering for awhile. Made minimum wage, and did not worry if I were tipped or not. I never expected it. That is where people go wrong these days. They EXPECT a tip ALL the time, not for giving exceptional service. They expect it for bad service, for ignoring you or never remembering to bring you a drink. They also expect it just because they are there. Not everyone of course is like that, but in Las Vegas, it seems almost everyone is like that.

Yes, I agree. Tips jars are EVERYWHERE. I have never worked food service but I was a hairstylist for about 12 years. I never EXPECTED a tip from day one, so every buck I got was a bonus and was a reflection on who I was and how I took care of my clients. (I was tipped well!)

I would rather be like England where they don't tip. If that means I am charged a bit more for my meal, so be it, but don't expect me to oversuppliment a person's low wages. To keep it on topic, I honestly don't tip much at a buffet if all they do is bring me a drink. I'd say a buck or 2.

I went to a buffet once where the waitress informed all of us at the table that she was a single mom trying to pur her son through culinary school, and any extra cash would be appreciated. Sorry, begging doesn't make my tip larger. Fill my drink, clear my dishes, and impress me with your service and you will be compensated accordingly.

For two people, at the M's Studio B I tip the server $5 and the wine server $1; at South Point or Sam's Town a couple of dollars. Usually 10% of the cost of the buffet since it is self-service.

I leave 2 bucks. It's a buffet, not a real restaurant. The only thing they're providing is a hostess seating you and a server filling your drink.

If my drink isn't filled quickly? No Tip For You.

(Too late.)

Without reopening the great "tightwad vs generous tipper" debate, I'd just like to mention that one of my friends at the casino worked a full shift yesterday and went home with $1. All it takes is for a couple to "dine and dash" (which the server has to pay for), and that's it for the day's pay.

It is my experience that many guests go to restaurants with the attitude that they're going to pick apart the service to the extent possible to justify leaving a small (or no) tip.
====================

Good points.

My ONE "dine and dash" experience as a waiter turned out quite well. The couple grabbed the check, ran past the cashier and out the door, knocking over the local police officer coming into the restaurant for his dinner. The following night he assured me that they received their next couple of meals free in a place where they were unable to "dine and dash."

In many states, a restaurant cannot charge their employees for "dine and dash", broken dishes, and other chargebacks.

The thing that really, really, really irks me is when people say, "Well, it's their own damned fault for being in an industry that pays less than minimum wage."

1) They're WORKING. They're not drawing unemployment or welfare. They're busting their asses working for tips and a really small paycheck. They're not taking the easy way out. It's not like jobs are easy to find.

2) The National Restaurant Association SHOVELS money at Congress to insure they don't have to pay servers or busers a fair wage. Nobody has the servers' backs -- except the lucky few who are union.

3) Because being a server is less and less financially attractive, anyone with talent moves to other occupations. Thus service declines. Thus tips go down. Thus less people want to do this for a living. And so more people complain about the lack of quality service. And on and on and on.

We are fast approaching the point where anyone with half a brain would NEVER open a restaurant, because it's impossible to get good help. Think about that -- the only restaurant options in many towns will be kids in paper hats asking if you want fries with that.

Nice broad brush stroke! This NEVER happens to me. I have a line pass at Wynn but I find their service no different than less luxe buffets. Why? I don't know but when I sit down I engage my server. I'll ask how the night is going. I'll say something funny to get then to laugh. I'm nice to them...because I want them to be nice to me. I have a better time and they get compensated accordingly. I truly cannot remember when an above-quoted incident has happened to me. Go figure...

Maybe you are just lucky. We are always nice to our servers, when they are there that is. At Aliante station buffet for one, they have one person working a big area. They are running around frazzled. Blame it on the bosses.
It must be nice to hang out with your server and tell funny jokes, that they actually have the time to stop and listen.
Most other places, they have enough time to ask what we want to drink, they drop a few straws on the table and dash away.

It has been my experience that some people never have a good time at a restaurant, or on vacation. They're basically miserable people who think the entire planet is out to chisel them out of their hard-earned money.

Other people ALWAYS have a good time at a restaurant or on vacation. They're the "glass isn't just half full, it gets refilled often" crowd.

I've had a lot of miserable overbearing managers in my life. I've also had a few good ones. One of the best wrote interesting observations on the dry-erase board. Things like, "Nobody cares how much you know, unless they know how much you care." And, "It's a lot easier to genuinely care about the folks you meet than to pretend that you care."

One of my favorites was, "A 'problem' is something you can't fix by simply throwing money at it."

I kept that particular job until the week before I left Key West.
