I consider myself a pretty good tipper at normal restaurants (minimum 20% usually 25%) but am interested in what a good tip is for a buffet? I usually give a $1 to one of the chefs in line and leave some money on the table for those who clean up the plates and bring the drinks. Is 20% the norm for buffets too?

Buffets are hard to figure. Usually wife and I, if I get exceptional service $10. Average $5. To me it's different than a restaurant where I tip 20-25%

I feel guilty at the buffets when most people don't leave much if any tip. I tend to leave more than I should.

I think $5 would be a big tip. 10% maybe.

I tip 10-15% at the buffet. The buspeople do all the work, anyway.

$2.00 per person at the table would seem about right. In most cases the only service I get would be a drink order.

...and used plate removal. My guess is that we both learned that tipping rule in Atlantic City.

I recall reading here long ago that someone based their tip on the number of drink refills received - although I do not remember what the dollar amount per refill was.....

It depends. If I head to the Bellagio buffet where there is a good level of service (i.e., my glass is never empty and the plates are cleared), usually my tip is 15%.

If I go to the casinos in Chicago where you get your drink and the plates are rarely cleared, I leave NO tip.
