I am retired and want to live as economically as I can. Though I want a nice neighborhood, I don't want to incur high HOA fees. Would also be interested in cost of real estate taxes for a house say 1400 sq. ft, approx. $120,000
Need a house because of dogs.

Are there any other bargain perks for seniors such as eating out, etc.
Also, how far a drive is Henderson from the Vegas strip? What areas are closer to the strip that are affordable and safe?

Taxes will be around 1200 a year if 120k is the assessed value. Henderson is about 15 minutes from the strip. Can't tell you about the senior stuff, because i'm not that old yet.. getting there though...

I would consider Aliante also but its a bit farther and in the northwest.

I know that stations casinos used to have a lot of good deals for seniors.

And + 1 for Alliante. My neighbour's parents live there in a 55+ community and love it!

Yes, there are plenty of special perks for seniors here. And one nice thing is that most places give the senior discount for 50+ rather than 55, 62, or 65. That was a nice surprise for us when we moved here two years ago.

Most of the locals casinos (Coast, Stations, etc.) have one day each week that is designated as seniors day wherein they offer special promotions such as 1/2 price or BOGO dining, discounted movie tickets, free slot tourneys, free afternoon shows, etc. And senior discounts aren't limited to casinos either. My wife and I happened to be shopping at the Premium Outlets on Tuesday and learned that all stores there offer 10% off all purchases for seniors every Tuesday. Even one of the grocery store chains offers discounts to seniors: Albertson's offers either 5% or 10% off your grocery bill (I forget which) to seniors the first Wednesday of every month.

Edit: Just saw that you posted a question on the retirement forum asking about life in Las Vegas. Other than responses from KiwiKate, you can just about ignore anything else you read there. AFAIK, no one else who participates in that forum lives or has lived in Las Vegas, and any other info you receive there will be biased second-hand info based on their preconceived notions of what living in Las Vegas must be like. (I saw the one response from the idiot who said we had no scenery. He must have never left the strip and didn't notice the mountains or the beautiful desert terrain.) If you have any other questions or concerns about living in Las Vegas (or Nevada in general), you're better off asking them here rather than in that other forum. (BTW, I used to be a regular on that forum, but stopped posting there awhile ago because I got tired of all the inane threads that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject of retirement.)

Thank you so much MadManofBethesda. (love that name) That was a really nice response. I have spent a good part of the day on Realtor.com looking at houses. I was looking in Henderson. Looked at the other area mentioned here buy can't remember name, but it seemed more expensive, and I'm trying to avoid high HOA fees. I can't do a senior community. I want son to have house after I leave planet earth, and he is too young. Is Alliante only a senior community? What's it like? Any other areas I should scope out on Realtor.com, keeping in my $120,000 budget?

I went over to other board, when I thought I wouldn't get enough views from retirees on this board. So glad you chimed in.

I have a single family home in Aliante, gated but not senior living. My HOA fees are $35 per month for the Aliante master and $41 per month for my sub association. The fees vary based on the HOA and what amenities are covered with the funds. I saw from $20-$250 per month when I was shopping for a house.

To the OP:

As retirees in Henderson, the one unexpected thing we encountered was medical care -- as in, we are dissapointed in the quality of health care here compared to other areas. Perhaps we were spoiled living in Silicon Valley before - many physicians there are from Stanford, Berkeley, UCSF etc.

We've found the physicians here to have lower qualifications & training. And, many good physicians are going "concierge" where even if they take your insurance, they won't admit you to the practice without an up-front annual concierge fee - several thousand dollars that will not be covered by insurance. This extra fee allows their practice to have fewer patients, they say, so you'll have faster access to the doctor.

If you don't want to participate in a concierge practice, you can of course find a regular practice doctor , but we found many of these went to medical school outside the USA, frequently in the 3rd world, and had their training outside the USA.

We've taken to just travelling to Utah or California for non-urgent medical care.

Having said that, we still love Las Vegas.
