Hello, I'm a first time poster! Exciting (well, at least for me)! My family (husband, toddler, and five dogs) are considering relocating to the Las Vegas area to be close to my daughter's aging grandparents. My biggest worry is crime. We live in the suburbs of Chicago and don't have to worry about someone breaking in to steal petty items, we don't have to worry about walking down the street at night with our toddler or myself (a woman) walking alone. We have to live in a non-HOA house rental. (Already checked into the pet fanciers license and all seemed ok.) From other people's posts on this forum, I was thinking about these zip codes 89108, 89148, 89131, 89129, or 89015. Do they areas seems safe for a middle-class, caucasian family? Or what other areas would someone recommend that might be safe and good for dogs?
Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts!

You live in Chicago and worry about crime in other cities? Isn't Chicago about the third worst place for crime after Detroit and Washington, DC? A nice "suburban" (we hardly ever use that word here-it doesn't fit the style of western cities) area here would be probably more safe than anywhere within 1,000 miles of Chicago. At least it appears that way to the rest of the world which believes that crime is a contact sport in Illinois. So buy in newer developments and don't worry about crime. It's not like that here. But keeping a gun near the bed is still a good idea anywhere. The loud ratcheting sound of loading one in the chamber of a shotgun, in a dark, quiet house, is all it takes to give a hardened criminal a heart attack.

Your real concern should be the five dogs. Unless you are a registered breeder there is a limit of no more than three adult animals within city limits. (I think it's the same in all three). So you may have to make sure you buy in the county, which means everything that isn't within any actual city limits. Sounds like you've already looked into that.

When asking about an area, the zip codes don't work very well since they cover large areas that contain all different kinds of developments. That said, I think I''d avoid 89108. I live in 89129, so know it's good. So is 89131. 89148 should be all right. 89015 is Henderson and covers some Ok, some not so good parts. I'd avoid it.

Here you can't really tell when you are in one of the cities (Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, or Henderson), or if you're in the county, anyway, and all it means is you have different commissioners, and a few different ordinances. In North Las Vegas you can't have a rooster, but you can have hens. That sort of thing. And for now, Henderson and North Las Vegas have city police forces, while the Metropolitan Police Department, under the Sheriff of Clark County, has jurisdiction over the City of Las Vegas, and all the rest of the county.

But since it all appears as one big city, it is all generally referred to as Las Vegas. Unless of course, you are that highly moral institution called Citibank, and, heaven forbid, you issue credit card statements from (gasp) Las Vegas. Then you get the Post Office to give you a private zip code, and call your four square blocks of Las Vegas, "The Lakes, NV".

BTW: My wife and I love dogs too.

I would expect your biggest issue would be finding a landlord who will rent to you with 5 dogs.

Maybe I could help you out. But my advice is only good for upper-class Australoid families. Not middle-class Caucasian families.

Snark aside, I'd go find a half-acre somewhere in the more rural parts of Las Vegas and buy it. (Basically, 1/2 acre is as rural as we get. It's still not rural the way most people think of the term. But there are places where it's OK to have a few chickens. And places where it is most decidedly is not.)

With five dogs, you are making things VERY hard for yourself as a renter. Landlords already think your family is going to trash their house. Five dogs, and your rental deposit would make a dandy down payment.

As for where, it doesn't really matter. All the places that will interest you are on the outskirts of town. Particularly all the way North. There's a lot of room out that way. Think of the valley as a giant bowl. You're going to want someplace near the rim of the bowl. And you'll want to avoid Summerlin and most of Henderson because of the HOAs. That leaves North, Northeast and East Las Vegas. East will cost the least, but will have the worst schools and the highest probability of neighbors who speak Spanish as a first language.

But let's face it. This city is not known for excellence in education. It's going to be VERY hard to find a place with a decent school, no HOA, and five-dog friendly. I'd say it's impossible. But perhaps someone will prove me wrong.

I live in that zip code and there are several properties for sale with significant land attached that would meet your needs. Housing developments in the area all have HOAs, and I doubt that any of them would allow five dogs. Mine doesn't.

89130- 89131 might work. Lots of rural properties and Shadow Ridge HS is not a bad school.

You might want to check the Clark County ordinance. My wife volunteers at the shelter here and is pretty sure the Clark County law is three dogs max without a fancier's permit. You must also have all dogs fixed if they are not licensed for breeding.
