FWIW, I don't trust Angie's List because they sell preferred placement to contractors. If you google around you can find contractors griping about the hard sell they get from Angie's List, such that highly rated contractors who do not pay for placement are guaranteed to be listed behind contractors with lower reviews who do pay up.

I see that sort of thing as a major conflict of interest on the part of the operators of Angie's List. It is one thing for a service like that to be funded by the sellers, but when money trumps honest reviews then the integrity of the entire site is now in question.

Also FWIW, I've got the same gripe with the better business bureau - they are 100% funded by members and their policies for "expiring" complaints against members are much more lenient than for non-members. Basically, unresolved complaints against non-members are never expunged from the BBB records, but unresolved complaints against paying members are deleted after a certain period of time that various by location, but is typically on the order of a year or two. They have been known to use legitimate customer complaints as a marketing tactic to try to get businesses to join and start paying dues by promising to delete them as per their policies.
