Yes and they are pretty much identical to how you make a bug screen. I don't endorse this site because I've never bought from them (located on North Pecos), but they have a DIY how to showing the similarity to bug screening (same tool and everything). >> Do It Yourself Window Screens, DIY Solar Screens, DIY Home Improvement

except for arch or round shape windows...how do you curve the aluminum frame yourself?

Surely there are stiffer/heftier frames, and screens with better UV blocking or better visibility?

It's been my experience that the Big Box stores are never the FIRST place to look. They're useful for checking and comparing prices. But maybe one time out of 10 they're the best value. At least for the stuff I buy.

I have yet to figure that out myself, which is why I replaced all the screens in my rectangular windows and not the arch ways ...

I suspose you could find someone that will curve the frame for you. In an arch window it would only need to be one peice as the other 3 would be straight.

AFAIK, most solar screen installers use SunTex fabric for their screens, which you can find at Lowes and probably Home Depot as well.

They do. Home Depot has a better selection in this case. However:

A 50-foot roll of SunTex 90, 48" wide costs $206 at Home Depot.

A 100-foot roll of the same thing costs $327 at one of the online screen supply joints.

I have found similar savings on the frame material, spline, corners and everything else. Basically, for what I'd pay Home Depot for materials to do our windows, I can get enough material for my mother-in-law's place, too. And not just a few windows, either. Both houses, every window. Again, if there is a local brick & mortar that carries these products I will be happy to shop locally -- provided their prices are in the same ballpark as the online vendors.

I found a frame-bending tool on one of the online screen sites. But it costs $900 and they won't ship it to Las Vegas. You'd have to ship it to an out-of-area friend, and have them mail it to you.

We can do 40 windows on two houses for around $1,500 and three days of my time. As much as I'd like to just pay someone to do it for me, I'd rather take an extra week's vacation this year.
