3 years might be a stretch but count on it being available by the end of the decade. Companies designing autonomous driving systems have already logged tens of thousands of test miles. They didn't just start playing with this stuff yesterday.

What's more, many of the systems used in autonomous vehicles are already on the market -- cars that steer themselves; cars that can detect lane position and even correct lane departures; cars with GPS systems; cars that can regulate their speed to the flow of traffic and even do emergency braking/stops by themselves. All that's really left to do is integrate these systems together.

This is going to kill the airline industry. I already hate flying. Sitting back in my car for trips within 500 miles is a no brainer versus flying.

I try to avoid hand gestures to other drivers. It isn't wise to take people's attention from their driving any more than they are already distracted.

I think this would be great. I would absolutely love to have a car drive me around. Since I am drunk most of the time, I would be able to get out much more often since I cannot get another DUI. It would help me out immensely.
I think you are joking with this post, but just in case....yeah, right. In the case where a cop should pull one of these over, for whatever reason that you will not be aware of in a blackout (like no blinker, a tail light out, whatever), you would be arrested. You would have some sort of "key" in the ignition. You can bet MADD is all over this already.

Doesn't work that way. They say you still have to be behind the wheel and sober and ready to take control at any moment.

I actually was serious. I thought it would be able to drive me home like a cab would while I lay down in the back seat. In a dui conviction, they have to prove all 3 of these to get a conviction. I do not know how they could get me on number 1 if I was in the back seat.

1. That you were driving, and

2. that you were under the influence of alcohol or drugs or any combination of the two, and

3. that you were impaired to the slightest degree.

In that case, this driverless car serves me no purpose. I no longer support it. I have no problem driving a car myself if I am sober.

Yea, I thought the same thing. It's really totally pointless if you have to sit there ready at any moment. May as well just drive yourself.

Ah. Well, my cousin was in the back seat, he stupidly had the keys in the ignition for the radio, car was not running. He got a DUI. If the keys were not in the ignition, he would have been ok.
