Finally made it up to Mt. Charleston Lodge this morning for breakfast. What a difference from the so-called "Resort" that I went to last month for lunch. Now this is what I had been expecting when I went to the other place! The food was very good and the scenery was great. Especially enjoyed sitting and eating on the outdoor deck. It was actually pretty cool out there and my wife had to go back to the car to get her sweater. We will definitely be going back again (and again....).

After breakfast we stopped at the Spring Mountains Visitor Center, picked up a trails map, and then did a little hiking before heading back into town this afternoon. All in all, a very enjoyable morning excursion.

Glad you made it up there. We've had breakfast, lunch, and dinner there, but I think breakfast on the patio is our favorite. As far as hiring a chef, their problem is the commute. They have from time to time over the 48 years I've been going there had great chefs and not so great chefs. But it's hard to find consistent help on the mountain since there aren't that many people living up there. After a while everyone gets tired of the commute and they quit. It's also expensive to operate in a remote place like that. True, the town is getting closer, but it's still remote.

The Forest Service is building a brand new, large visitor center where the old golf course was just before you get to the "Resort" (Mt. Chas. Hotel). It's going to be very nice, and my group is being allowed space at the new center for the Silent Heroes of The Cold War Memorial. You can buy the book about it in the present visitor center.

Collie died, but I'm pretty sure that Barbara Orcutt still owns it Dyn. I'd swear I've seen her there fairly recently. Not sure of the date on this: Mount Charleston: Mount Doom Part 2 - 8 News NOW

Mountain lodge owner dies at 76 - Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005 | 7:02 a.m. - Las Vegas Sun

Here's the only story I could find on the Dummkopfs:
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL: NEWS: Frontwoman of polka-comedy band dies at 50

I saw our former Lt. Gov., Dr. Lonnie Hammargren playing with the Dummkopfs up there one Sunday afternoon. I've seen him play at private parties too. Interesting man. A big asset to our SHCW committee. Lonnie Hammargren "The Nevadan" - Hammargren Home of Nevada History

I remembered, but had to look up the spelling. Thank goodness Google knows what I'm thinking. If only I were as intuitive as my computer.
