family of 5.. we'll be staying in las vegas strip hotel..

we want to visit hoover dam..is it better for a family of 5 to just rent a car and drive or use a tour bus?

if choose rental car, once we reach hoover dam..
are we going to buy tickets to "explore" hoover dam? or it's free?

The tours are not free, nor are they especially cheap:

Bureau of Reclamation: Lower Colorado Region - Hoover Dam: Dam Tour

You can walk around outside and enjoy the views without paying (except to park your car). I'm not familiar with the tour bus, so I can't comment on that.

I think the answer depends on whether you want a rental car for anything else in Las Vegas. (And I can't imagine why you WOULDN'T want a car in Las Vegas. The Deuce bus gets real old, real fast -- especially buying five day-passes at a time.)

Whether you buy tickets at the park itself will depend on whether you want to see the inside of the power plant. If you just want to walk across and snap pictures, tickets aren't necessary. The Dam bus tour will include these tickets.

we wont be using the rental car for anything else except going to hoover dam..

so my plan is rent a car.. drive down highway 93 until we hit hoover dam bridge/entrance then park our car.. and just enjoy the "free" view..

is it worth it to pay for the dam tour?

Family of 5 -- bus tour = 5 bus tour tickets, rental car = 1 rental car.

When I was there in Sept parking was free.

I'd never take a bus tour, but that's just because I prefer to do things on my own schedule, not on a tour company's. (the reason I will never take a cruise of any kind) A friend did and she said she wished she had just driven for that very reason.

The parking garage has a fee - around $7, I believe - and the parking alongside the roadway is free ... if you can find a space.

We parked in the lot on the other side of the dam. There were 2 lots there and lots of spaces free. No charge.
