I work from home but go in to the office sometimes just to get updated, a new state of mind, a change of atmosphere etc. etc.
I could not do that before my husband passed because he was around the clock care. I have been with my employer 6 yrs.
Yesterday, I was in the office and a man was waiting in the lobby for an interview. I asked if I could help him. He said "I am late for my interview" Yeah you will get the job. LOL

I'm so sorry. I didn't know your husband passed away. I hope you are doing OK.

I work from home for nickels and dimes. I write.

It's hard to find any employment here, not just work from home. It's a challenge.

There are lots of reasons why companies prefer to have their staff up close and personal. All of the reasons mentioned are valid. Many more jobs could be done from home and eventually, probably will. After all, all those folks in India(and other places) function. And they are thousands of miles away from the office. It's just going to take time.

I agree about the sales jobs. It's easier to motivate people and foster competition in a face to face environment.

I know for me, the pay has gone down too much out there. Back in the day I made $50k / yr and now can't even get a call back for $35k / yr. for the same type of job. Anything below that I wouldn't be able to afford childcare or the fuel to get me back and forth. So in my case I just have to pinch pennies to get by on what my husband makes.
It's just crazy to me that although Admin workers are a dime a dozen, wouldn't you pay to have the good ones that come highly recommended and qualified? And I don't mean pay the high salaries, I mean just give the telecommuters a chance, make them check in once a week in person, something.....
If the boss is involved (as they should be) then you know how much a person can get done in a day by job. So in that case if your employee is slacking then they need to go, whether they are in the office or not. I've had some employees that worked as slow as molasses and others that could get their work done in 1/2 the day. So I don't think that is necessarily a in/out of office thing. It can go either way.

consider your professional skills worth the same as your childcare cost. Now you can happily stay home and take care of your child.

I do, but I also miss working.

The previous company I worked for closed otherwise I'd still be there. And I fear that with being out of the job market for 5 + years it will be near impossible to land a decent job when my little ones do go to school.
