Does anyone know how far I would need to drive from Henderson to find a lake (preferably with trees) that is a bit cooler than lake Mead?

That's funny, someone at work suggested Big Bear. The only problem with BB is that there are no campsites available for Friday checkin until the end of August. Since I will have to drive from Vegas after work (~12 pm) it seems that It's not likely I will find one of the first-come-first-served sites. Would Arrowhead be any better?

This place is much quieter and bit cooler than Lake Mead:

Eagle Valley Reservoir near Pioche, NV. About the same distance as Big Bear, but really no trees to speak of there.

All the campsites are first come first serve though. I've been up there numerous times and it's 50/50 if you'd get one leaving at 12pm from Vegas.

They do have overflow camping that you almost for sure could get into.

Just depends really. My work allows me to go during weekdays and that's really great because I actually love being able to avoid all the other people. I forget that this is a problem for most.

In Utah there are a few spots as well, Like Panguitch(spelling?)

Try calling. I've had the ranger tell me he'd save a spot before even though I could not get one online.

I'm just starting to get into the whole camping with the boys thing myself. We plan to go to Sedona in August. Camp and do some trout fishing.

I believe you must be a home owner to access the lake

Pahranagat Lake (National Wildlife Refuge) is by far the closest, just south of Alamo. Great for stargazing too, Groom and Papoose due west about 30 miles or so... never know what you may see! Keep your eyes peeled for petroglyphs and arrowheads, it's ancient Paiute tribal territory.

Yes that is true. Strange thing really. Even if you stay at the inn you can not go fishing. I don't blame them, tourist probably ruin the lake.
