Was a pain in California to dial 1-714- before every number, even if it was across the street

It says in the article that all residents would dial a 10 digit number, but no mention of the "1" in front so there won't be a long distance charge, which would be crazy, but now you have to memorize an even longer number.
We had the 10 digit dialing in NC. You didn't use the 1, just dialed the area code before the number. I never lost the habit lol.. I still ten digit dial

With the rise in the use of cell phones, I don't think 10-digit dialing is as big a deal as it may have been years ago. I wouldn't be surprised if the vast majority of new area codes were overlays as opposed to splits.

When it happens it'll be 17 digit dialing for the first few months for some and a year or more for others...

I'm old enough to remember that when my phone prefix (in another state) was 725, my number was referred to as SARATOGA5-xxxx. The first two letters of a word or name substituting for numbers on the phone used to be common.

Yeah, growing up in Miami my phone number was MOhawk 5 (665-xxxx). We've had 10-digit dialing for years in the D.C. area so that is nothing new to me. Moreover, I just use a cellphone anyway, so I've been 10-digit dialing in Las Vegas since I first moved here.
