Is living in a high rise condo safer then living in a house? Seems like it would be, and maybe more so if you travel a good deal.

Exactly. The high-rise Strip condo I live in has very strong perimeter and internal security. And, the fire and safety systems add to my peace of mind. When I lock that front door behind me as I'm headed out of town I know there's nothing to worry about.

I found out just how safe high-rise condos were when I went to get insurance for it. The rate for my condo on The Strip is 10% of what I pay on my house. The odds of a high-rise condo getting burgled or vandalized are very low and the fire and safety systems are top notch (condos in LV must meet the same strict safety standards hotels do). A condo at Sky had a kitchen fire about 3 months ago while the residents were away. The fire was contained in the kitchen by the fire suppression system and no other condos were damaged.

Honey, the chances of another plane hitting this house are astronomical!

Hate to burst your bubble but the third worst hotel fire in modern U.S. history was the MGM Grand in 1980.

The fire was contained by the "fire suppression system" but 85 people died from toxic fumes, smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Actually the fire was not contained by the fire suppression system because there was none in the restaurant where it started. There was an exception to the sprinklers for places that were attended 24 hours. That fire changed all that.

It may well be that there are some remaining vulnerabilities but it will not be that one that gets them.

Getting out of the building is the concern...

MGM Grand Fire's 22nd Anniversary - 8 News NOW

"...a pair of former Metro detectives say that key evidence relating to the fire was suppressed. The detectives think the person who set fire at the MGM is the same one who torched the Hilton Hotel months later."

"He pulled out a keno slip and drew a diagram of exactly how the suspect did the arson at the MGM,” said Hilliard. “He said the suspect wired open the flue through the air conditioner that fed the paper products room, went through a wall where the keno board was in the coffee shop and took out the casino in 90 seconds.”"

Still a gnit. Whether caused by arson or an electrical short it took off because of the lack of sprinklers. Without that it would not have gotten a good start. Now all areas have sprinklers. There were also more than one problem with the ducting which is probably the biggest thing that killed people.

I guess I am not making myself clear...

Fire starts, you are on a floor (in a highrise) above the fire, how do you escape?
High-rise condos are vulnerable to fire, earthquake and... low flying aircraft.

Those problems are the obvious ones. You therefore equip a building so that fire and earthquake have no ability to significantly damage the building. Low Flying airplanes and meteorites are an issue anywhere you live. Insurance rates however would indicate they are seldom a big concern.

This stuff is all probabilistic. You simple get the odds down to a very low level.
