I saw on the news that over 3,000 vets a year would get sent to California for any treatment that the valley could not provide. This new hospital is very much needed.

Never had VA care, but I've heard vets say that the VA is your second opportunity to give your life for your country.

I've got some personal horror stories. I'll give an example...

Lab tech gets ready to take my blood, I notice he's not wearing gloves and mention it. The tech informs me that "we're out of gloves" but "don't worry" because they are "for HIS protection... NOT MINE"!
True story.

Any idea of what this could potentially mean for NLV and the immediate area surrounding the hospital? More fast food or casual dining establishments? More houses, or increased home values etc. Or the total opposite?

I work for the VA in So Cal.. I would not go there if my life depended on it.... I have never seen a more stupid bunch of people in my life.. I still wonder where or how they got there medical degrees or licenses...

And most of them are more worried about the 1 hour of overtime they worked than they are of doing there job...

Or trying to scam the government out of as much money as they can...

A lot of the medical people who work for the VA only do so thinking they can then go outside the government and get higher paying jobs.. And realize they can't make it in the "real" world and come back to the VA...

And some stay there becasue they KNOW they can't get in anywhere else......

The VA is one of the biggest wasters of Federal money there is... They do 2 year contracts instead of 1 year like the other agencies..So they get a crapload of money for 2 years and blow all thru it and then pettition to get more the next 2 year period.... That way they can get away with giving awards to people that are more than other employees monthly slaries...

It will take SOME of the pressure off the other hospitals. But as mentioned upthread, the VA is not exactly "Rolls Royce" health care. It's more like "Yugo and Ford Pinto."

They really should treat the vets better. But they don't.
