I was wondering if anyone has installed Ikea kitchen cabinets and can speak to their durability. Not sure how they would compare to say Home Depot lower tier cabinets that you order. Not sure how price compares either at this time, but of course there is a lot more labor involved when installing Ikea cabinets, as you have to assemble them first. But that aside, before looking at the difference in cost, I need to know how they compare in quality (or lack thereof) Anyone have any experience?

Here's the best deal I was able to find on cabinets.

GCB Imports
5040 E Cartier Av.
89115
702 260 6700

I felt really guilty because they were made in another country. I always try to buy local or at least made in the US. But I couldn't find anything I could afford that was made here.

I have installed IKEA kitchen cabinets in three different remodels. I will just tell you about the first one to attest to durability. I bought their lowest-priced white cabinets for a remodel of a city house in Pittsburgh. Oddly, Pittsburgh was one of the first cities to have an IKEA and I took a chance on them shortly after the store opened.

I was amazed by the variety of sizes and options I could get at the rock-bottom price range. Although I put them together myself (yeah, it's a pain, but I did it with no experience), I had them installed by a contractor who was doing other work in my kitchen. He couldn't believe how inexpensive they were compared to the quality. But here's the important part: when I sold the house 12 years later they were still in A-1 condition and the Realtor who represented my house used a photo of the kitchen as the intro picture for the online MLS listing. I didn't have any children, so perhaps a busy family might have some dings after that many years. But one of things I find most attractive about IKEA cabinets is that all doors fit all cabinet boxes, so if you want a new look you can just change the doors. Also, IKEA constructs its cabinets to European building standards, which since 1992 have been greener than American ones. If you want beautiful, stained hardwood, they're not for you. But if you want cost-effective and stylish, they are that.

IKEA is worldwide the #1 purveyor of what the Europeans call "fitted kitchens," so you know they have to be serviceable. Just watch a few episodes of House Hunters International and if you know IKEA kitchens you will recognize them in many of the homes from Great Britain to Russia to Indonesia.

I have an entirely IKEA kitchen. I LOVE the cabinets. I've had them for three years and they still look brand new. I also love that they are self-closing.

Hi. I've been installing ikea kitchens in Florida and now California and Nevada for the past 8 years. To answer your question, there's really no comparison between the two. IKEA cabinets or what considering Italian kitchens, thEre used to be a higher end version store of Home Depot called home Expo which sold the almost same type of kitchens that ikea sells today that used to run roughly 800 a linear foot. Today's home dépôt kitchens are pretty much Chinese made and no where near as practical and or attractive. It shouldn't take you too long to put together once you do the first three or four. Installation is a bit tricky given you'd need to know how to work a table saw for the fillers and panels. feel free to contact me with questions if u ou have them specialistikea@gmail.com and good luck. K. Livingstone.

I've have the freestanding units in our Canada house and I really like the solid stainless steel sink top that just sits on top of the freestanding sink cabinet. I clean the hard water marks with a little ceramic stovetop cleanser and they are so very durable. I have had them for about 12 years now and they still look great and no scratches. The other cabinet is butcher block and it cleans easily too. To keep the wood looking new I remove everything off the cabinet and soak in vegetable oil for a day and then wipe. The shine on the natural wood stays for months! We did the IKEA laminate flooring too and it has held up really well. Since we did it all ourselves, there were no installation costs involved and the plumbing hookup was easy. I guess if I ever want to change the looks of my kitchen too it would be easy enough. :-)

Sounds good. Guess I'll wait for the new IKEA to open before I remodel the kitchen.

I can't wait for IKEA to open here in LV. I want to replace my cabinets when they do. My sister remodeled her house and used IKEA cabinets and they held up really well.

That's exactly what we're doing.
