There are mosquitoes, it has been a bit more humid this summer and I would guess all swampy pools have probably provided nice breeding grounds for them. There are not many, though and hopefully they disappear soon! I believe I read about 2 cases of West Nile Virus in the valley too.

Florida, and all the eastern seaboard, looks like a Off commercial most of the time, so our piddly few mosquitoes are not worth mentioning, except, as you say, we've had some West Nile Virus cases reported. (Usually) heart worms are no problem in Las Vegas, but would be if you lived near the Henderson Swamps. I don't think The Lakes, or Desert Shores, have a mosquito "problem" but they could breed there if something isn't done to control them. Try not running your pool filter for a while and see what happens. Or put a cover on your pool in the winter time. It will catch rain water and breed mosquitoes in no time. Even an old tire or a bucket left outside will catch water and breed them.

BTW: I just killed one in my bathroom this morning, and it's the second one in a while. And I know the difference between a mosquito and a damselfly.
