It's dead simple to make. We make gnocchi every Thanksgiving with the leftover potatoes.

That "feast" appeals to the drunken "fahgeddabowdit" crowd. I've never been, because I've been warned off it. But that's what my friends in the kitchens of Las Vegas tell me.
Don't let the fact that you've never been somewhere stop you from being an expert on it.

When several master cooks tell me that the San Gennaro feast is about as authentic Italian as "Snooki," I'll take them at their word. If it was a bunch of schlubs from elsewhere in the casino, I'd give the fest the benefit of the doubt. It isn't. I don't.

I knew many second generation kids with parents and/or grandparents from Italy that were so dark you might think they were black, and I knew just as many that were blue eyed with blond hair. WV is over 95% white in most areas, and "white" includes people of Italian descent. So we didn't have black vs. white racial problems like they did in other states, but there was almost as much "racial" prejudice against Italians when I was growing up as there was against blacks in other states. Not sure what that's like now, but I notice the young Italian kids have taken to calling non-Italians, "Snuffies", as in the cartoon character, Snuffy Smith, I suppose. Once when I was about twelve years old I threatened a rather large 18 year old "Snuffy" with mayhem because he was going on and on calling my best friend a "dirty black da*o" to his face. My friend took it in stride and told me to calm down.

Funny thing back then - there were so few "Colored People" that if people had a black friend they would sort of show him off.

Well it's not supposed to be the Villa de Este, it's a street fair. Nothing better than greasy fair food cooked on a dirty grill.

If that's your thing, by all means. I'd rather buy some pork and some casings and do it myself. What I don't understand is your advocacy of the festival in the face of comments like, "I felt like someone was going to vomit on me," and, "I felt like offering hand sanitizer to everyone I met."

The general consensus is not kind to this festival.

I went to some mom and pop "Italian" restaurant in Salt Lake a couple of years ago. They had Gnocchi on the menu. I got excited and ordered it. It was fried mashed potato balls.

If it is so simple, why do you only make it once a year?
