Whoa! Sounds like a story from before OSHA was around or at least enforced. Nowadays even a simple construction site has a couple of health and safety guys "bugging" people.

"Hey! Put those goggles on"
"Where is your ear protection?"
"Are you certified to do that?"
"Why is this first aide kit empty"
"I'm shutting this site down!!!!"

I have some cousins that take photos and log/categorize samples taken out of the ground. They tell me that the OSHA people take all the "fun" out of working.

This was back when Nevada was still a free, wild west, state. You were expected to look after yourself instead of having the government babysit everyone. There were fewer people in the whole state than there are people in Reno now. When you hear us guys with more than 35 or 40 years in Nevada say we miss the good old days, that's what we miss - self-reliance and all the freedom we had to do whatever we wanted as long as we didn't hurt anyone else.

No mining for me, I'm claustrophobic.

Those OSHA guys might be a pain, but I can tell you that I had a patient come in with a nail in his skull because he took the safety mechanism off of his power tool. Then, the geniuses at his job site decided to tie some string / thin rope to the nail and try to pull it out.

He walked in with a large nail tied with string sticking out of his skull.

He was fine. Thick skull.

The safety inspectors are there for our own good, it's just so inconvenient. Our annual safety inspection results in no work getting done just to make sure we pass the inspection. Just to touch a battery we have to suit up with every single precaution available. Goggles, gloves, apron, baking soda...

On another note, we have several in-house safety guys so we get used to it.

Inspections are a total pain in the rear. At my last job we had both the state (thanks to Desei) and an independent certifying authority come through.

The owner of the company said he was going to start looking in people's cabinets and drawers monthly during his inspections. I found that a little offensive (sort of like having your cell tossed) so I brought as many feminine hygiene products that I could find to work and put them in the top drawer.

Hey I've been unemployed for awhile now would appreciate any more information someone might have as of where or what to look under to find these jobs I've checked craigslist and I'm mostly going in circles. I wish a person could google mining jobs without jobs.com, monsterjobs.com, jobsindeed, or find your dream job now freakin pop up.

How Ironic OSHA is a PAIN!!! OSHA was created because over 26,000 people a YEAR were getting killed on the job in the USA. It came in existence in 1971. That is a average of 73 people a day. Today the number is down to about 12 a day. You don't believe OSHA was needed it sure was and still is. Anyone who works should be glad it does it is there to protect you and help prevent the real PAIN you might get. Taking a few moments to put on safety glasses or suiting up to work around batteries is less time it will take the Ambulance to get there to haul you off to the hospital. It is your right to have a safe work place and be able to return home to your family and friends each day.

On to the Mining Industry OSHA does not govern over it!! The Mine Safety and Health Administration does
(MSHA) They set the standards to follow and enforce them. These standards are federal law same for OSHA. The standards for both OSHA and MSHA are minimal safety standards and not world class standards over and beyond. These standards are for the protection of the workers YOU!!! that your employer must follow. So follow them and go beyond what they require don't become a statistic.

This is not really a Vegas topic as much as a NV one. AFAIK, there's no major mining in and around LV. If you want to mine, you're heading north, out of Clark County.

I wonder if there's been serious commercial prospecting around Vegas, or is Norther NV just that much richer in desirable minerals.

I believe there is some exploration going on in or around Nye county. I received a nice job offer in that area for mining/oil maintenance type work. But as far as Clark City prospecting, maybe we are surrounded by too much government owned land.
