And so what? I'm not from California and "the 15" just sounds better to me.

Is there a correct and incorrect way to say Las Vegas?

Better than what? Better than saying I-15? (Because those are really the two choices.)

What do you say in Des Moines?

Do you say you're going to take I-80 to I-35 or do you say you're going to take "the" 80 to "the" 35?

Real Californians don't talk that way.

Not true at all. NorCal has been used in this thread by someone from Northern California.

Maybe the poster meant "Nevada". That word gets mispronounced all the time.

"The" has sort of come into use here in the past decade or so. It used to drive me crazy as I was sick of being invaded by Californians. Now I sometimes use it myself, but usually when I'm being sarcastic.

Don't get me wrong, I like most Californians, especially when they stay in California. But they outnumber us and they tend to move into other states and just take over. We worried that they would come here and do unto Nevada what they did unto the Socialist Republic of Kalifornia.

Actually, carpetbaggers from every state are in Nevada now, and screwing with the best system any state ever had, which was, "lay off the heavy regulations on citizens." So we're getting used to hearing people say "The 15", and "The 95", which may not look like much, but it's proof that little by little, outside influence is ruining the last "free" state.
Well, at least you got to experience it with all it's freedoms.

Just because you don't hear the accent doesn't mean it isn't there.

Here, take this fun quiz. Results: What American accent do you have?
Cool quiz and it got me right on. I thought it was funny that people would choose any different answers from what I chose, because I think I say it right!

Interesting thread. I think we do say "the 95" or "the 15". Must have heard it somewhere here. But, in Detroit (THE "D" ), I say "75". That's it. No "the" or I in front of it.

I took this one too. My results say I have no accent.

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Fun quiz.

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

This was mine and all true, except I get, "you must be from the Midwest/Michigan" all the time. I meet so many Michiganders here that it makes me wonder who the heck is left in MI.

I was raised in the west by parents from Wisconsin and Ohio respectively. They called soda "pop". I never did.

Vegas is such a melting pot of people. I can pick out certain regional accents, particularly Bostonian or New York, but I really don't think that has much to do with "The 15 or The 95"

I tend to say "The" before the freeway name. " I'll take the 215 to the 95 and ....."

Correct: Las Vegas

Incorrect: Vegas

Las Vegans chafe about "Vegas" the way San Franciscans chafe about "Frisco."
