My job is transferring me to Las Vegas in just a few weeks, so I'm trying to research as much as I can on where to live. I'm 25/m, single, and would like to live in a nice area with other young people if possible. Additionally, furnished would be ideal although not necessary. My job will be just west of downtown. Right now I'm looking at apartments/condos for rent in green valley/ henderson, summerlin, and around the strip. Am I looking in the right areas? Also, how is The Meridian? I'm trying to keep it around 1000/mo or less, but would be willing to pay a little more for a really nice place. Thanks for the help.

I repeat my plea for all the posts like this to be merged into a "Where should I live in Las Vegas" mega-thread, much like our "Current Update on the LV Real Estate Market" mega-thread. Then we can tell newbies, "Please read the last 10 pages of this thread, and get back to us with more detailed questions after you have learned a bit more about Las Vegas." At least then they will post what they have learned, and from that we can glean some idea of what is important to them.

And, just so fultobt doesn't think he is being ignored:

1) We don't have enough information about you. Do you like peace and quiet? Are you a party animal? Other than price, what are you looking for in a place to live? You can rent a house for $1,000 a month. It won't be furnished. But it will likely be nicer than an apartment/condo.

2) The only way you're going to know what area of town works for you is to get out here and see for yourself. "Just a few weeks" isn't much time for research. Did your employer just spring this on you today?

3) When you get down to it, for a 25-year old single man, one area of Las Vegas is basically as good as another. I wouldn't bother living near the strip. The strip is a 30-minute commute or less from almost anywhere in the Las Vegas Valley. So unless you don't have a car, where you live doesn't really matter. It's mostly suburban tract houses, anyway. And the weather isn't much different from one area to the next.

4) Please spell out what you're looking for, and be as concise as possible: "I'm looking for an area filled with young, upwardly mobile professionals. Hopefully with enough of a social scene that I can get out there and meet people." Or "I'm looking to start a family, and need a solid long-term neighborhood with decent schools and good access to physicians and markets." Or "I want to go clubbing every night, meet a lot of hotties, and party like a rock star."

The more information you provide, the better the answers are going to be.

Everyone who comes and posts here is looking for something somewhat different. Merging all the threads together would be an unwieldy mess. Constructing some threads with information about specific areas is something I'm still looking at. Time (MY time) is a factor. In the meantime, yes, the OP can use the search function to find information already here by using certain words in the search.

That's one way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it is "Everyone who comes and posts here is looking for mostly similar information."

We have never, ever, ever had someone ask, "What's the worst area of town with the worst schools and the most crime? I'm a bad-ass meth dealer and looking for new markets to break into."

Not once.

In the Real Estate mega thread, we discuss a broad range of topics that all deal with the buying and selling of property in the valley. And the newbie who posts, "Hey, look at this, the housing numbers aren't as good as we've been led to believe" gets his post merged and learns we've discussed that very point 50 times in the last four years. It's somewhat of an unwieldy mess, too. But it would be even MORE of an unwieldy mess to break that mega-thread into 1,000 more-specific threads -- thus clogging the forum with hundreds of simultaneous real estate debates. I think it's the same deal with "where should I live" posts.

I suggest a "Where should I buy a house in the Las Vegas Valley" thread. And a "Where should I rent in the Las Vegas Valley" thread. Renters and buyers have different criteria, although both groups are still looking for "nice places in safe areas."

And while you do a great deal of work keeping this forum straight, the people providing all this free information spend more time, collectively. Our time matters, too. I don't know the intricacies of merging threads. Does it take a lot of time or effort? It's something that you or jasper or scirroco would only need do one to three times a day.

We should make a thread about what to do with those threads. Also, the stickies picture thread should be in stickies. It does not move at all. Maybe a picture every month or so.

If I recall correctly, we're only allowed two stickies per forum. The real estate mega-thread doesn't need to be stickied because it is updated often enough to stay near the top of the first page. I have a feeling "where should I live/where should I rent" would see similar activity.

Thanks for answering. To answer your questions:

1) I like peace and quiet, but if possible I would like a place where it's possible to walk to a few restaurants/bars.

2) Unfortunately I just found out late last week, and I've got to show up right after Thanksgiving. So no, I don't have a lot of time. I am planning on staying at an extended stay place for a week or so to get a feel for some different areas.

4) I would prefer an area with similar aged people as myself, 'young professionals' I suppose, and at least close by to some restaurants, bars, etc. And hopefully this is in a place where my car isn't broken in to twice a week. I'm not interested in starting a family any time soon, so schools, etc are not a concern.

Thanks again for the help.

That was a typo above.
I meant to say that the Las Vegas Pictures thread should be UNSTICKIED. Replacing it with a cheat sheet of where to move would be a lot more usefull.

I've just have to give some quick input...

Do not stay at one of those weekly places, you do not want that to be your first impression of living in Las Vegas. They are filled with the biggest low lifes in society and it would be a depressing as hell.

Search craigslist, there are a few short term rentals usually month to month minimum for around $1200 or so. They are fully furnished right down to linens. Get one of those places for a month while you get to know the area, where you work, and how far you want to commute etc. Please don't stay at a weekly place.
