Match 5 is better odds. Million bux is decent to win.

$1,000,000

1 in 5,153,632.65

Sure, you could win a Million bux on a progressive slot....

Playing lotto, most people don't go bankrupt. Slots .... it can happen over time.

Having a "chance" is decent.......and like von949 said... $2 over 3.5 days is not much.. even $20 over 3.5 days is nothing... I have gone through $20 at the slots in 10 min... or less.

I have my Powerball ticket.... lets hope a Canadian wins! I will become a Whale in Las Vegas

20 tickets per week = $1,040 per year.

$1,000 invested per year with a modest 10% return yields $532K after 40 years. (I've got a realty fund that has done better than that my entire life, except 2008. I also have an index fund that is sitting at 15% so far this year, and hovers around 10%. It's not like this stuff is hard to do, after all.)

20 lottery tickets per week yields bupkis. Except for those very, very lucky people who beat the very long odds. I'll take the $532K, thanks.
Hey, I'm not a lottery player and agree that it is a stupid waste of money. I wouldn't walk to the corner to purchase a lottery ticket much less drive to another state. However, that doesn't change the fact that your 175 million to one statement was grossly inaccurate unless you're insisting that everyone only buys one ticket.

For me: the corner store, gas station, etc.

But my chances of winning are no better than yours.... Doesn't mean I won't try!!!

I just do not understand the overwhelming need for some to attempt to influence and dissuade others as if all knowledge and thought processes flowed through them in such a manner as to render life with such clarity that it appears the rest of us less than optimal human beings are clouded in a fine mist brought on by rose colored glasses.

I'm just sayin.
In other words, those who think they know it all are particularly annoying to those of us who do.

One of my favorite misquotes of Isaac Asimov. No sides taken here, it just seems to fit.

Do people actually spend that much on lottery tickets every week? Man I thought I was a loosey goosey because I buy a few when the pot is over 200 million.

Each ticket however, has a 1 in 175 million chance. Purchasing multiple tickets improves the personal odds of holding a winning ticket. But it does not change the ticket odds. Follow me?

And yes, there are a lot of people who buy a single ticket. Even with 10 tickets, lightning x2 is more likely. Players have to buy 20 tickets a week in order to get below 1 in 9 million. And when people get to those kind of numbers, it's foolish not to just plow it into IRAs, mutual funds and realty funds.

Like I said, I had a professor who played lottery every week as his retirement scheme. He hit a multi-million dollar jackpot and became one of the few "retirement money" players to actually beat the system. I'll have the same kind of payout -- provided our civilization lasts that long -- without resorting to random chance.

Even though I have an extra $20 to blow every week, I'll never buy a ticket. I'd rather have the extra half million by investing it. I have co-workers at the restaurant who could retire as multi-millionaires if they'd invest instead of betting on sports. They think it's a big deal when they win $1,200 on a $10 parlay. But they're just going to blow those winnings on some other foolishness. Take that $10 in daily sports betting. Invest it instead. And it's almost $3.5 million in retirement money after 40 years.

"Oh, I only have to work half an hour for my sports betting. It's fun."

I'd prefer to be wealthy.

You can buy Powerball tickets in Littlefield, AZ - at the Beaver Dam store. Off I-15 N. just past Mesquite. Maybe 90 miles from N. Las Vegas.
