I'm considering a move to LV and would live to find an neighborhood that is earth-friendly, hippie minded with mom & pop stores. Someplace with an art-vibe and farmers' markets.

For example someplace like:
Berkeley, CA
Portland, OR
Austin, TX
Ashville, NC
Burlington, VT
New Hope, PA
....if you're familiar with these areas.

Any suggestions would be wonderful! Thank you.

There is a thread on Las Vegas culture, where numerous Las Vegas locals site access to the Bohemian, the counter culture.

Hi Vagabond,

I love communities like the ones you describe, but unfortunately that doesn't exist in Las Vegas. There are people with those beliefs, but they are a tiny minority, and scattered throughout the valley, not centralized in any one place. You have to build your own virtual "community" by frequenting/supporting the places/people like that and making sure they continue to thrive in the valley.

I love Portland -- Vegas could use a healthy dose of Portland green/weird!

What about the 6 cities that you named? Why not move to one of them?

I don't think you will find what you are looking for in LV. The other cities you mentioned are where you should keep looking, and there may be others.

Where I just moved from was 10 miles from Berkeley. You won't find anything like it in LV. Actually, I don't think you will find anything like it anywhere else on the planet.

Your location says Berkeley. Why leave?

Add just about anywhere in Colorado; Key West, FL; Athens, GA; Savannah, GA; Brunswick, GA; and Tampa, FL (the Centro Ybor area in particular), Charleston, SC; Stockbridge, MA (any small Massachusetts town, really); the area around Mystic, CT; and Montpelier, VT to your list.

All of those places have the kind of vibe you're looking for. And with the exception of Key West, the cost of living isn't that bad.

Las Vegas is the polar opposite of these kind of towns. People here are not "hippie minded." And there are precious few mom and pop stores. This is an establishment town, full of chain stores. And that's how people here like it.

You just 'splained why there was such a backlash in other states, like Nevada, re: Kalifornians moving in - it's called Kalifornacation, and we don't like being abused. Maybe you should keep searching. Utopia might be out there someplace. Probably near San Francisco.

I lived in Portland, OR. There is nothing remotely close in Las Vegas, thank God.
