So if I get this limo driving job with Las Vegas Limo this spring, I'd like to be able to rent a house if I can afford it. I know that ideally your living rent shouldn't be anymore than 33% of your total income

This would mean my budget for a house if I were to rent would be $900-$1400. Do houses in the NW/Far North Las Vegas/Aliante area cost that much or more? Zip codes 89130, 89149, 89131, 89084, 89031

Truthfully I don't need to rent a house, and if I did I would try to get room mates, and I also do not want to run the risk of being "house poor" either

But if I can pull this off, could I find a house in these areas for this range?

Or should I just settle for my own apartment?

Of course I wont be doing this the instant I move either, I plan to save the deposits first.

You could probably actually own one for that payment, Davie. (First time buyer's program) I don't think you will have a problem finding a rental out here in the Aliante / NWest section of town with that budget. Keep in mind, that oft quoted 33% number is supposed to cover all housing expenses (utilities, etc) in order for your budget to be truly comfortable.

Sometimes though, I think I would be better off renting an apartment or something. I've grown tired of lawn maintenance and some communities offer free wi-fi and satellite tv. Some of the newer apartment complexes have pool areas that look like those at a strip resort with outdoor fireplaces and cabanas.

I'm sure one of the real estate types will chime in with some rental listings.

One of the smartest moves I ever made when initially moving to Vegas was renting a non-expensive apartment(3 bedroom) right across the street from my job. Then renting two rooms out for $500 each(all utilities included). I did it for almost a full year before moving in with my girlfriend(now wife).

Thats $1,000 each month for 11 months. $11,000 to help "off-set" the cost of my rent and utilities. I was able to pocket/save a little over $3,000 from doing this.

This would be much easier to do if you rented a house instaed. Probably could charge more also.

Southwest would be closer to your job, and just as nice (or nicer imo)-- 89113, 89103, 89118, 89139, 89178

There's a lot of rentals available right now. If you were to move, now would be the best time! South of 215 in the Southwest would be where I'd look. Craigslist is your best friend.

Why would you want to live in the NW when there are so many places available that are nice and close to your work?

Also keep in mind that roommates can be a PITA especially when they don't pay, move, leave you on the hook, etc. while a house can be nice you shouldn't over extend yourself. If you can afford the place on your own fine...if you're relying on someone to cover the rent you could end up being sorry.

I know the SW has plenty of nice places, the SW is very nice and I'm open to any place I may come across there and I am well aware it is closer to work then the NW is. I know a real nice complex off Trop and 215 called "X-It" I always wanted to live there if the opportunity ever arose

Also aggrofish, I have gotten a lot smarter with my money since I have moved back to Orlando and I dont plan on moving into a house right away, after my first month on the job when I add up how much I make and decide if I can afford a house or stick to living in an apartment. I don't want to over extend myself and wont let that happen this time around

I'll keep an open mind to it. But the NW is my preference
