I usually try to avoid blanket statements like that, but they do seem noticeably worse than in California. I've twice caught people driving on the wrong side of the road.

Apart from that, I really enjoy it here.
In what neighborhood are you?

Green Valley, right off Windmill and Green Valley Parkway.

I really love the neighborhood here. It's traditional suburbia nestled away from all the craziness but only 20 minutes away from the Strip. The streets are clean and safe, the people are friendly, the walking trails are beautiful. The air and sky is much more pleasant than in LA/OC, where I spent most of my life.

Again, the only downside is that the nearest store is over a mile away. Guess I can't complain too much (so much, including UNLV where I just began grad school, is located within 20 minutes), but my old neighborhood in Orange County had a gym, the post office, restaurants, and the nearest large shopping center all within walking distance.

I understand that. Our ideal neighborhood (Anthem) is similar.. a drive to anywhere..

Never heard of Red Dog. But yes. It applies to the local brew pubs. All of them have video-poker machines at the bar. At least most of them don't have smoking because they serve food.

I "like" several of the brew pubs on Facebook. And all they ever post is pictures of video-poker screens showing four-of-a-kind or a royal flush. "Woo hoo! Somebody won a few thousand dollars!"

They NEVER post information about their beer, or entertainment, or new dishes. Nope, just video poker.

Furthermore, I believe that even if I were to open a proper pub, it would crash and burn. People here aren't looking for that -- they want a nice, comfortable place where they can spend four hours with their heads down, staring at a video poker screen while huffing down Marlboros.

They'd take one look at the bar and complain, "Where's the video poker?"

If I thought a decent pub would work in this city, I'd quit my job tomorrow and open one.

2) The homogenous nature of this town. It's just one Applebee's, CVS, 7-Eleven, Video-Poker Bar, Chili's, Carl's Jr., Walgreens, Wal-Mart, Target, KFC after another. People don't demand culture or mom-and-pop stores. They demand a Chik-Fil-A to round out the assortment of chain stores. Oh and a Cracker Barrel. That's what this population wants more than anything -- a Chik-Fil-A and a Cracker Barrel.

3) We could have a 100% drop-out rate, roads in complete ruin, and armed bands of thugs roaming the streets. People here would STILL be against a tax increase.

There's a lot more, but those are three of the big ones.
1) What???? McMullan's and Steiner's are two excellent pubs! Great food too and not a slot machine in sight. I'm sure there are others.

2) I'll agree that there are a bunch of chains in the valley, but there are some great mom & pop gems too. You just have to look for them.

3) Agreed, but that comes with the territory when you move to a city which seems to lean libertarian. Thankfully we don't have100% dropout rates, gangs roaming the streets nor bad roads... quite to opposite in fact. Vegas has some of the smoothest roads I've driven on and the new 15 corridor is very nicely done.

Vegas is only city in US where if you want to find better job you have to be pretty girl or have "juice".
If you are just a guy when u go for interview or audition they will ask you tons of questions. If you are girl - not even half of that!
I know lot of friends / dealers who know all casino games and have nice personality but they are not able to find job in better casino. But know also girls who found dealer jobs in good casino knowing only one game- blackjack

Go to the McMullan's home page. First image you'll see is a video poker screen.

Go to the Steiner's home page. First thing you'll hear is a video-poker payout sound.

Again, there is not one proper pub in Las Vegas. They're all video-poker dens. If I wanted to watch people with their heads down, staring at a video screen, I could just go to the Apple store. I repeat, if I thought that a pub could do well just by being a pub, I would quit my job and open one. It's video-poker or nothing in this town. And given the choice, I'll have a pint or two at home with my wife. Then we can shoot pool in the game room.

My game room is a more proper pub than anything in Las Vegas. The atmosphere is certainly better.

On a couple of my trips out there, I met up with people I had posted with over a now defunct message board. We met off the strip in some local bars. I forget if they had bartop VPMs, but otherwise, they were perfectly normal local bars. One of them was a Steiners.

Are there any decent band bars in Vegas?

I semi-agree with you on the strip casino bars. But I don't think I would about the bars in the locals casinos. They can approach bar normalcy.

The rest are casino-based, overpriced tourist traps. May as well include Ri-Ra and Coyote Ugly in your list.

I repeat. Las Vegas does not have one (not one, nada, nichts) proper pub within city limits. You have been to the Green Parrot. Do we have anything that is even 1/10th that good? Not just no but hell no.
