I was reading in the R-J where the CEO of SBE, Sam Nazarian states that he has secured the final amount of capital to begin renovating the Sahara and turning it into "SLS Las Vegas".

I was thinking that it would be nice if Mr. Nazarian kept some of the artifacts from the old Sahara to put on display in the SLS Las Vegas, just to honor the legacy of the property and perhaps the old Sahara herself .

I'm not one of those die-hard nostalgic types of people who pines for the past to come back, but I think it would be good for Las Vegas as a city to have some space for its heritage. To have a little space or hall in the place where locals and tourists can come and know the history of the city and how it evolved.

I'm wondering if the "Downtown Grand" (formerly Lady Luck Hotel Casino) will do the same?

I stayed at the Sahara back in the mid-eighties.

In your opinion would you say that, at that time, the Sahara was in the top ten hotels on the strip?

I think maybe it was............

I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for the "SLS Las Vegas."

We're still waiting on the Fountainbleu, Echelon, and now the doomed Skywheel at the south end of the strip. For some reason, developers are great at starting projects. But they can't finish them. All it will take is some cost overruns, and then Mr. Nazarian has to go back to the investors looking for more capital. Maybe they'll ante up, maybe not.

When the Sahara was still open, the area of Sahara Blvd. just east of LV Blvd smelled like an open sewer. And people who worked there tell me the place had massive plumbing problems. All that will need to be fixed, and I imagine it won't be cheap -- a couple dozen surprises, and we may very well be stuck with yet another half-finished project on the Strip.

That would be an interesting thread. The Best Half Finished Projects.

Nazarian does tend to like a challenge. If it can be pulled off, he's the guy to do it. I wish him the best of luck and look forward to being there when SLS opens.

Apparently SLS is pushing up it's opening date to 8/23

Newest Strip casino SLS Las Vegas moves opening up a week to Aug. 23 - Las Vegas Sun News

I'm a bit skeptical this will work, but I wish them good luck.

Sam Nazarian excels at tying into his target demographic even when skeptics and critics think he'll fail. He's got an uncanny ability to lead trends rather than follow them - creating demand when others did not even recognize a (pent up) demand existed.

Could Nazarian be wrong this time? Sure. It's bound to happen - even to him. But, he's worked hard to tie in SLS with his other properties as well as with his business alliances. He has a loyal and enthusiastic customer base outside of Las Vegas and these people will come to SLS because of his successful branding of SLS.

I'm betting SLS will do well.

Bill

The thing is, this smells of trying to put lipstick on a pig (the pig being the hulk of the former Sahara.) Next time I'm in Vegas, I'll have to do a walk through. Passing off an old retread as something new and hip can be pulled off, but I don't know if it can be done with this property.
