I am a single female and looking for safe apartment when I move to Vegas in October. Should I get an apartment with an attached garage? I am a nurse and no job yet, so not sure where I will be working as far as driving times go. I am used to driving 45 minutes to/from work where I live now, so that won't be too much of an issue. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

No place is ever safe for a single female living alone, so get a gun and learn how to use it if you don't already know (and that goes for people in Podunk too). But, Summerlin is probably as safe as you'll find. If you can find an apartment with a garage, take it. You'll probably just have to be happy with covered parking though (and be prepared to have people try to steal your assigned parking spot). You could look for a complex with security guards. Someone here might know of some.

Probably all of them. Crime maps may help.

My wife and I (and 3 young kids) have spent 3 years living/working/shopping west of Buffalo Drive and have never felt unsafe. YMMV as a woman, but my (male) friend and I have traveled all over the valley (buying stuff through Craigslist) and never had a problem or felt unsafe.

I disagree about the safety part, but I'm not a single female. I love guns though, so when you move here you should a gun and join us at the range

The apartments with attached garages usually charge a ridiculous rent amount. Check into a townhome community as they almost always have an attached garage and a lot of them are renting out units for the same if not lower than apartment communities. I am a single female, been living here for 4+ yrs now, and safety was a concern of mine as well. I contemplated getting a gun, but after a couple months of living here, I did not feel my safety was at risk ever at my apartment. The area has changed so much since that time, so I cannot give you an idea of what is safe and what isn't. If you're really really scared about your safety, invest in an intruder alarm system. It doesn't have to be ADT or anything, but something with a buzzer that goes off to scare off possible intruders, they're reasonable at Home Depot or Lowe's. Just be street smart and you'll be fine. In the dark out here, I never walk alone in my community, even though I feel quite safe. At the store at night, I am never on my phone distracted from my surroundings, and I'm always checking my car's back seat before getting in. At night, I'll alternate leaving my porch light on so it's not consistently on or off, or on only when I have guests coming over. You don't want people learning what your routine is.

You are a nurse and more than likely will work in a hospital. In Spring Valley are at least 3 major hospitals, Spring Valley Medical Center, Southern Hills Hospital and St.Rose Dominican San Martin Campus. Aside from these hospitals are clinics like the VA Southwest Primary Care Clinic. Lots of decent condos/apts in Spring Valley near these hospitals and you can pretty much find a decent apt/condo all over Clark County. Goodluck with your search.

That's an excellent suggestion. And I can add on to that if that doesn't assuage her concern: Rent a townhome in a guard-gated community.

Another advantage of guard-gated communities is that such an alarm system may already be built into the townhome.

covington cross and crestdale intersection is condos that have garages (don't know availability), but the Summerlin hospital is right down the street as well as several Dr office plazas. This area is very nice and has a lot of things to do very close by.You will ALWAYS find some amount of crime but I would say summerlin has a lot less then the more inner city. Green Valley is also a nice neighborhood area and once again, crime is everywhere so keep yourself aware of your surroundings. Good luck
