What kind of plant is this?

I see those along I-15 and I want to buy one for my front yard.

And you'll discover they do better in climates that are just slightly cooler than Las Vegas. It goes "typical Mojave scrub plants," then "Joshua trees," then "pine trees" as you move up in elevation and it gets slightly cooler.

Drive up to Mount Charleston or Cold Creek and you'll see the micro climates change.

Can I dig out a Joshua tree from the wild land or is it against the law?

It's against the law -- AND, a joshua tree is not going to do well in Las Vegas anyway. Why bother?

Buy the U2 album of the same name, and hang it on the wall.

i'm glad there is someone out there that enjoys looking at these things. i detest them. i heard waaaaay back in the day, the cowboys would burn them at night for lite around camp. in my opinion, they didn't burn enough of 'em.

Plenty of Joshua trees by Red Rock Canyon in the area of Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, Bonnie Springs and also near the main highway. Some are tall, others short and many burnt to a crisp from a wildfire a few years ago but some of these Joshua trees are slowly coming back.

Yes, they do GREAT in cooler climates -- like what's found near Red Rock, or on the way up to Mt. Charleston, or Bonnie Springs.

They don't do so well in Las Vegas and other "hardcore Mojave" areas. Leave 'em be. They'll bounce back on their own.

As you drive around in the desert you don't realize it because it all looks so flat, but truth is you may be driving UP into higher "life zones" where there are subtle differences in flora and fauna. Most of Red Rock Canyon is higher in elevation than Las Vegas. It is more noticeable as you drive up to Mt. Charleston. Pay attention to the plant life as you increase in altitude. It changes as you go. When you see Joshua trees in California the altitude is a little higher than here also, even though it is all in the Mojave Desert.

That said, you can buy them at your local nursery. We have them in yards all over Las Vegas. I've never heard before that they don't like the weather in Las Vegas, but maybe they don't. I see Saguaros, from the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, growing in yards all over. They are protected like most desert plants, and very expensive. People cover them with burlap in winter. Maybe you need to set up a swamp cooler for your Joshua Tree.
