Congressmen want to kill Las Vegas high-speed rail loan - VEGAS INC

Infuriating!

Even if ridership is slow to start, we cannot let ourselves become less competetive by not updating our infrastructure to modern standards. It has the biggest bang for our buck over the long term. Not just for tourism, but for trade as well.

Good!

So long as that damned train terminates at Victorville, I am against it. Los Angeles or Anaheim or don't bother. Do it right or don't bother. Nobody is going to use a train that starts/ends in Victorville, CA. So we spend $6 billion to build a train to nowhere. Nobody uses it. Then "proposed extension to someplace useful" never materializes.

There's $6 billion we'll never get back.

This is government nest feathering of the highest order. Kill this turkey before it becomes just another taxpayer burden.

Says so right in the article you posted.

"The XpressWest project is a 185-mile, double-tracked passenger rail line between Las Vegas and Victorville, Calif."

And if they build it that way, that's all it's ever going to be. It will NEVER get extended, because the money will run out and nobody will use the system that they install. For the umpteenth time -- do it right or don't bother.

"The XpressWest project is a 185-mile, double-tracked passenger rail line between Las Vegas and Victorville, Calif.

Last year, the company began negotiations with the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority to build a 50-mile track extension to Palmdale, Calif., where the line would join the proposed California High-Speed Rail line, effectively providing a high-speed line from Las Vegas to Los Angeles’ Union Station."

This may be the point of confusion.. is the $6B just to get to Victorville and then it's another project and who knows how much to complete to LA?

Yes, it's $6B just to get to Victorville. And then it's another project to get the train to Palmdale -- and everyone between Victorville and Los Angeles doesn't want a high-speed train running through their town. They are going to fight it tooth and nail. Then some wacko environmental group will try to halt construction because the proposed track passes through the only known habitat of the Mojave Manure Beetle.... and on, and on, and on, and on.

I have seen this same thing play out too many times to have any faith that it will be done right. Do it right the first time or don't do it at all.

I think I'd rather just hop a $70, 1 hour flight. But that's just me.

Actually the extension to Palmdale makes a whole lot of sense. There is virtually no civilization between Victorville and Palmdale.. It has to be a couple of orders easier than attempting Anaheim or LA.

ABSOLUTELY AGREE....this is why government has spent everyone into debt for the next two generations. Stupid projects that make little sense, but give politicians something to crow about to the slavish media.
