What's a BB themed costume? I lead a sheltered life.

Never mind, I hadn't read the next post.

I get so tired of hearing people talk about how horrible it is to raise children here in Vegas. I have been here a year and a half now, I have 3 girls, 13, 11 and 5. They all play club soccer and the older 2 play every sport their school offers. We are always running to either a practice or a game. We do homework at picnic tables at parks and walk the tracks while waiting for someone to finish practice. The best thing is that we are always TALKING. We talk about choices, consequences, boys are evil and only want one thing() and, because we are Catholic we talk about morality pertaining to our families beliefs. There are nights I am so tired I can barely think straight but I know that if my children need me or want to talk about anything they will come to me. We have taken them down to the strip and yes, they were curious and we talked about things like sex and drugs etc. Maybe on the strip it is a little more "in your face" but let me tell you, some of the shows on TV and the movies they watch are way more explicit than anything they have seen on the strip. I love this city, my family loves it here and my children are normal, intelligent human beings who are just like any other children being raised anywhere else. My oldest wants to be on the SWAT team, my middle wants to be a pediatrician and my baby wants to be a teacher like mommy. Not a dealer, cocktail waitress or hooker among them. Raising children is hard work no matter where you live and blaming a city for problems with your children is a total cop out.

Could not agree more 5kings.... Wife and I are raising her g'son....[15] and we spend constant hours talking with him about choices......and consequences....he came to live with us wanting to play profootball [cause he could do that he figured with his d's and f's....] He now has A's and B's...[3.65 gpa] and wants to join the FBI...... AND he knows that dealers and pimps make a lot more money.

I would certainly hope that the kids don't aspire to be hookers....and is that so positive of a thing that they dont want to be hookers? I would try talking the oldest out of the SWAT team. Pretty dangerous work, and prob more dangerous than fighting in Iraq. I'm sure there are nice places like Henderson, but, when you have to take kids through a casino, with cocktail waitresses with butt cheeks hanging out flitting around,to see a movie, thats just plain sad. All in all, it is a toxic environment for a kid. And it is not normal for kids to see slot machines in every public place except church and gov't offices. And, lets admit it, they will see some pretty rough folks walking around in intersections and such. And look what they did to that poor kid in the casino. Not a place to raise kids. If you are stuck there, best of luck shielding them from all the stuff you see all over, which is not normal, even for adults........

wrong on so many fronts....i have to make this response short, as i am running late as it is, but here we go:

sw1230...keep your texas-sized morals to yourself. you can apply them to your own family, but don't assume that they apply to others. don't try to tell us what is normal...

toxic?? my guess is you don't ever go to beach do you? you'll see way more skin there than you will walking through a casino. and way to be disrepectful to cocktail waitresses, jack***. they aren't flitting around - they are working at a job that people like you make harder for them.

you live here a couple of weeks and you don't even notice slot machines anymore....and if you talk (i know...scary) to your kids and explain to them what they are then they are no different than coke machines or video games...you put money in and you get something out (a game, entertainment, a coke...)

as for rough folk...it's a city!!! maybe if you left suburbia you'd realize that the world is rougher and dirtier than your closed mind pretends that it is.

just accept the fact that just because you don't like LV (or indianopolis, or nashville, or chicago, or whatever) doesn't make them dirty, or boring or mean or any of the other names you've thrown out.

**oh yeah...and give the people who raise their kids here, people who actually know what they are talking about, the respect you would show any other parent

I wish everyone the best of luck raising kids in Vegas. I still think that the environment is not set up for families. Its a transient environment, which leads to high crime, molesters, petty theft, and all. Things people do when they have no stake in the community, or didn't fit in at the place they came from. From the 24/7 omnipresent gambling(of which a vending machine is a poor metaphor, as it always gives you a tangible product, and is an extension of a retail establishment), to the illegals passing out porno pamphlets, to the general homeless freaks and po folks wandering around the city 24/7, to the rowdy tourists who disrespect locals, and get loaded most of the time they are in town, to the everpresent strip clubs, even to the hellish summer sun, which is not the greatest thing for growing kids, or even adults for that matter, on the contrary, Vegas could easily be seen as the antithesis of a place to raise a family. Again, my heart is truly out to anyone trying to raise a decent family out there.

I think the below picture says it all.....
