In a recent and previous post a retired Police Officer from out of State was asking about security work and pay. I LOL at security work and other low wage work out here knowing the starting pay is anywhere from 12-15 an hour ( security ) . This is a joke for someone with a lot of experience and years of TRAINING. In my new home City of LV there is so much that is great here, but the employment issues are another matter. IMHO the large Casinos and Corps take advantage of the workforce and the transient nature of this great City. I am blessed that I do not NEED to work, but there are so many desperate people willing to work for so little. The reason I LOL at the wage of 12-15 an hour is based upon my observations and experiences in paying for services and getting estimates in everyday life. Here are some real life examples:

Day laborer 100 per day ( 7 hr day ) plus lunch ( cash )
cleaning person 20/hr ( cash )
tailor 40/hr ( estimated )
Painter 50/hr ( licensed )
pest control 60/hr ( 45 dollars for 45 minutes )
landscaper 80/hr ( charges 160 for quarterly visits here about 2 hrs ) cash
Mechanic at car dealer 100/hr
Attorney 300/hr

So how does 15 an hour sound ?

Now I know some out there will say there are overhead costs involved ( I know there are ) for the businesses but these numbers are outrageous compared to earning what some here would say is a good salary of 15/hr. BTW 15/hr comes out to about 29,000 k a year. What is the poverty income level for a family of 4 today ?

These are some of my day to day observations , reality and an explanation of why I LOL at what the employers in town get away with. In the end the employers get what they pay for.

I believe in this great Country, City and the dream of home ownership, but wages NEED to go UP. As long as you have a desperate workforce not much will change.

The above, is based on my personal experiences in the past year that I have been living in my favorite City .

The 100 goes to dealer not the mechanic. My house is 4k SF so I am charged 45 dollars and they take about 30-45 minutes. My point was what my costs are in the real world vs a 15 an hour wage. For example at 15 an hour one would work about 7 hours at their job to pay an hour of labor at a dealer to work on their car.

i read your post as las vegas vs other cities... the dealer rate for mechanical is almost identical here as to cleveland.. which has even a lower hourly wage.

Target CEO makes $28,000,000/year. Cashier makes $8/hr.

Only higher minimum wage will help the working class -- otherwise the profits trickle up, not down.

Yet Target cashiers in Australia make $22/hr -- and the prices for most merchandise in the store is very similar to US! It's just a fairer distribution of revenues -- yet they would never do it if they weren't forced to.

Hmmm...

Dealer rate is around 100 an hour in town on average. That is a lot compared to a worker making 15 an hour. I am not saying it is any better in Clevland. Again a person would need to work 7 hours at their 15 an hour job to pay for an hour of labor at the dealer. Big mismatch going on. The dealer is making the money not the mechanic.

As I read the above, my wife walks in telling me that one of her security guys just quit. LOL

To give some insight to your post, I blame the proximity of Nellis Air Force base. All that "subsidized" security from the base can't help at all. All last month I helped fill 300 slots for the upcoming EDC. All security positions filled with a military member will earn our squadron over $40K. I think the math came out to about $10 per person.

Just to clarify, none of us actually see any money, it all goes towards our Christmas party, going away parties and welcome home parties. It's the easiest/quickest way for us to raise money for our expensive events.

We do conventions, races, concerts and fights.

There are a couple of huge holes in your reasoning.

One is amount of engagement. Many of these people may get to bill these amounts when they get work, but many don't have any level of guarantee of getting work. You're $20/hr cleaning person may not have enough clients to fill all her available hours. The same with any of the independents you list. Someone working security at a casino is likely getting a full work week.

Another is benefits. The independents (and day laborers) don't get, so they either have to pay at individual rates, or go without. You casino security guy likely is.

A third is the top line vs bottom line issue. The independents, if they can't avoid it (cash) have to pay their own taxes, and have to pay both sides of the social security. In addition, may have significant business expenses they have to pay (rent, vehicles, equipment, maybe employees, etc.)

So, net of all these, and a yearly basis, the casino security guy may end up ahead.

If someone is unhappy with their position -- the best place to start is to look at a mirror. I recognize that we all have different abilities.

But where I work, there are a lot of security people whose job description is "sit on their ass all day." I think these people are overpaid. There is much blame at the top end, too (I cannot stand the fact that there are CEOs who make a gazillion dollars even though they ran their company into the ground). The fact remains, if someone wants a better life, GO OUT THERE AND GET ONE. In most cases, the only person holding them down is themselves.

Scoop,

I don't know if you read the thread that precipitated this one.

//www.city-data.com/forum/las-v...d-i-apply.html

There is a cop from Backeastland is taking his 20 and out pension an looking for basically a retirement job in Vegas. Onlyliveonce was trying to convince him to stay in Backeastland on his job and make more money.

Technically this was the correct thing to do. But Only was missing the point. They guy wanted to move to Vegas, and get a minimal job to keep him busy, generate a little extra cash, and maybe benefits. He wasn't looking to apply for chief of security at a major resort. I have a feeling your "sit on their ass all day" guys are in the same camp. In point of fact, Vegas being a retirement destination, I bet there's a lot of that, and, really, it's not that inappropriate.
