That's what I've always thought, never heard of one being installed that way.

Attic fans can work, it depends on the type of attic, how the attic is insulated, how well vented the attic is and how well sealed the rest of the house is from the attic. Probably some other variables in there too, lots of ways for things to go wrong.

I thought all that was cleared up?

It was in the ceiling in the hallway:

It makes sense that a swamp cooler would be used instead since that solves 2 problems at once - pulling air in and adding moisture at the same time. Thank you for your responses everyone!

The OP was never talking about using it this time of year.

If so, what temperature is the thermostat set at?

I have ours set at 115f. Except for the most extreme days, the fan isn't running ALL THE TIME. Our power consumption went down as soon as we installed the fan, so I'm quite happy with it. It moves appx. 1,000 cfm. The solar-powered fans are too anemic to do anything in this environment.

The ideal solution would be an inside/outside thermometer that turned the fan on whenever there is a difference of X degrees.

We actually have our smaller swamp cooler in the garage and vented up to the attic to keep it cooler. I don't know if it helps, but my husband thinks so. He met someone else who did that who swore it kept his house much, much cooler.
