Thanks for responding. My wife and I live in Michigan. I'm an author and radio talk show host, my wife is an IT manager with a defense company. I'm sure this is a daily question here, but as residents, do you see signs of the economy stabilizing? Our chief concern is employment, mainly my wife. No matter where I go, it's going to be difficult, but were hoping the IT sector is strong. Thanks again!

The IT field is extremely strong. If she has verifiable skills she won't have a problem getting a job. Set up a search on Indeed.

Las Vegas has decent IT opportunities, but it is still almost purely hospitality (80%? just estimating here), with the remainder mostly support services for the people who work in hospitality (health care, retail, etc.). Because of this unusual lopsidedness of the local economy, just about every big city in America would probably have more IT opportunities than Vegas.

As far as stabilization of the economy, mostly what we've seen is the beginnings of a "correction" from where it was at the bottom. But I wouldn't call it stable by any means.

Thanks topaz and CA! Yes, her skills are solid. She has 17 years as IT Management, mostly with GM. I am not very well versed in her job descriptions, what I do know is she has a great deal of responsibility. Topaz, I think the lopsidedness you speak of is the same Michigan, dependency on one Industry, and it's a disaster here. We have friends who live in Henderson. We were visiting this past February, we really enjoyed Vegas. The idea of no snow or close to zero winter temps is a big reason we want to leave, or going to leave I should say. I'll have here set up on Indeed, CA, Thanks a lot! I like this forum because you can actually speak to those who live and work in Vegas, rather than the COC and the picture they want you to see.

The economy for skilled people has definitely improved. Just talked with an old recruiter friend of mine and he said conditions for experienced and qualified people with degrees is almost the same as it was back in 2007. Pay is a little lower for new hires and having those qualifications is harder than it was, but his guess is there are almost as many openings and job hunters as there were back before the recession hit. The real issue is, as it is in much of the country, there are far fewer jobs for the lesser skilled. Gaming jobs are way off from where they used to be and frankly its hard to see gaming floor employment ever recovering as all casinos just learned how to live with less people over the last few years. Construction related jobs have improved, but are still well off what they were. Those two fields were such a large part of the economy in 2005-2007 and now they are a big reason why scary headline unemployment numbers are still out there. It gets said repeatedly, education and getting people new skills to go forward with is the biggest challenge the economy faces and Las Vegas certainly embodies it.

That's good information, Willy...Thanks. Sounds as if Detroit and Las Vegas parallel in that regard. I'm gonna start poking into the Vegas radio world, and Karen is indeed posting on Indeed. CA, Topaz, and Willie, thanks for the thoughts, certainly helpful. Hot today????

I'm wondering if moving before Karen finds work to be the smart thing. I'm guessing without a Nevada address, employers would tend to pass her resume by..

One way to do it is to get a UPS Store mailbox - $20 a month and you get a "real" address, not a PO Box, so you can put that on your resume, at least until you get an in-person interview

good luck

There are many subsets of IT-- everything from data center operations to system engineering, network engineering, SAP implementations, custom app development, security, etc etc etc. these entail different skills. Ask your wife to give you a description of her area and post it.
