I've been here about two months and from my observation I see a very heavy LA/ SoCal influence (minus the beaches) but I haven't gotten a feel for what Vegas itself is really like. Any native born Las Vegans care to shed some light on what the city is really like?

Major cross streets? North of Owens or North of Craig? Near Nellis AFB or far North West.

It's all different.

Is Lake Mead a mini-Pacific Ocean?

Ha! Not quite, but it is huge and we get waves high enough to swamp boats when the wind kicks up. I read that we lost a scuba diver the other day, and I know someone who lost a loved one to drowning at the lake. His body was never recovered. Again, Lake Mead is huge and deep and it commands a certain amount of respect.

As much as it pains me to say this, the answer is yes ...and no. There is a lot of SoCal influence here. But there is also a lot of Arizona influence. I believe that most of our builders came from either LA or Phoenix. And there are probably more ex-Californians here than ex-other states. (For the record, just like there are no EX-Marines, there are no EX-West Virginians either).

But the essence of Las Vegas is still strong, and we have a very unique city here. Don't mess it up. The way they did things back in Peoria might be OK there, but we don't want to change.

Also, you'll find this question has been covered many times, so just do some searches and you have all kinds of answers as to what this town is really like.
