People are not stupid. Over time, they will get tired of paying all the various resort fees and the like and just skip Las Vegas.

While some will say that will never happen, look at all the convention business Chicago has lost as a result of some of the crazy costs they were charging the major conventions.

The resort fees are not counted under Nevada room tax law,(at least, not the last time I looked) so yes they are also wriggling out of their tax obligations. This is one of the reasons the legislature is looking at an "entertainment" tax.

Individuals may or may not be stupid. The American public at large? Well, that's another story. When was the last time you heard "the average American" used as a compliment? Usually, it's used in a sentence like this: "Get a good image of the average American in your head. Then realize that half the people in this country are even dumber than the poor bastard you just visualized."

Resort fees aren't going anywhere. And people are coming to this city in record numbers. I can't understand for the life of me what they see in this place. But they're still coming in droves.

No one likes resort fees but I don't think it will stop people from coming to Vegas or going anywhere else.

I don't like paying for parking when I travel but I do it. In Vegas you don't pay for parking on the strip. I went to Florida in May and I had to pay $10 a day for parking at the hotel and $5 to park at just about every restaurant we ate at.

While I'm at it, look at all fees airlines keep adding to their flights. One adds something they all do it.

Why are more folks coming here more conventions so they do not pay the fee their CO. does second around the country many new Indian casinos are open in many states this in turn breeds new gamblers who in turn want to go to the American Mecca Las Vegas. Third the weather is a big pull also most people live in a humid climate and taking a week or two off in the summer is a crap shoot it either rains or gets very hot and humid so here laying around the pool is a treat. The other thing to look at is the age shift in the population many more seniors traveling and many more young folks and LV has much to offer both. Most vacation spots are pricing themselves out of the picture you can still get some great deals here in LV especially to eat. It is just too bad the brains in LV do not capitalize more on this and think of repeat business instead of we'll take you for all we can get now!!!!!!!!! The Airline thing is another thread in it own and they know they have us by the short hairs. Isn't Greed fun

So would it be better if they killed the resort fee and just raised their base rate by the same amount as the resort fee? Because that's basically the only alternative. Hotel properties in Las Vegas are incredibly cheap. They won't (can't) get any cheaper when compared to almost every other major tourist destination in the states. 5-star properties are especially cheap in comparison with or without the resort fee. Here is an example of the average nightly rate for 5- and 3-star properties as observed at a major travel site for the weekend of June 14th-16th:

Area; 5-star avg.; 3-star avg.
---------------------------------
New York City; $246; $90
Los Angeles; $254; $75
Chicago; $374; $60
D.C.; $239; $59
San Francisco; $495; $70
Miami; $186; $59
Las Vegas; $155; $44

I understand the possible disparity in pricing due to special events/etc in the various cities but the above example reflects what I typically see all year long. So even if you tack on a $20 resort fee to the Vegas published rates its still a downright bargain. Use something like Hotwire or Priceline and you stand to save even more. So no, outside of irritating uneducated people who feel they've been "tricked," I don't believe the resort fee has much if any negative impact on a consumers choice to visit. It might sway their choice to stay at one property or another but I doubt they would not visit at all. Is it misleading? Yes. Are they ripping people off? Not at all.

If they are coming to Las Vegas in record numbers, why am I getting 20 e-mails a day from Strip hotels offering me rates from $20-89/ night? Five years ago, you couldn't touch the Strip for under $100/ night. I do NOT gamble much so it is not a comp or a casino rate.

As much as I like to head out to Las Vegas periodically, it is NOT the only place in the country where you can spend a few days, gamble, and the like.

Food and Beverage makes more than gambling does these days. The goal is to GET YOU THROUGH THE DOOR. Then they can start Hoovering your money away. It's like timeshare companies offering some gift or another to get you through the door. Neither company can rob you blind until you are on their property.

Step 1: Get you through the door.

Step 2: ????

Step 3: Profit!

Like I said in other post the old motto from the Mob when they ran things is "Feed them cheap and then screw them in the Casino".

Reminds me of a story I once heard. A guy went to pay his bill when checking out of a hotel and saw a $20 per night resort fee. He asked the manager what that was for. The manager replied "Well, we have a pool." The man said "I didn't use the pool." The manager said "Well, it was there and you could have. We also have a gym" The man said "I didn't use the gym." The manager said "Well, it was there and you could have. It also covers your breakfast." The man said "I didn't have breakfast." The manager said, "well, it was there and you could have." The man plopped down $20 and got ready to leave when the manager stopped him. "Sir, you still owe $100." The man said, "That's the fee for sleeping with my wife." The manager was appalled and said "I didn't sleep with your wife!" The man replied, "Well, she was here and you could have."
