I love how they explain things as if talking to a child. "1 in 1,000,000 is like one cent in $10,000."

How about mentioning that there is NO safe threshold for uranium and radium? How about mentioning that alpha particles above 5 picocuries per liter is considered dangerous?

I continue to be glad that I have a whole house RO system.

You don't need a report to know that the quality of tap water is somewhere between "awful" and "disgusting"! Just smell it or taste it!

How do you know that there is uranium, radium, and alpha particles in the water?

2-4 parts per billion per the report. I wouldn't care if it were zero as it tastes like pond water.

Edit... Uranium is what I am quoting.

Because I read the report that is RIGHT THERE in the first post.

Enjoy showering in alpha particles and brushing your teeth with radioactive materials....

It would be interesting to see how these stats compare to other places. Radiation is essentially everywhere in the world. Luckily a normal immune system can fight off quantities of it. The "safe" EPA limit for Alpha particles is 15ppl so Las Vegas does at least fall under that. This is actually better than I thought, compared to what I've been hearing in the media. The number only seems dangerous if you have a compromised immune system (which this article covers) or perhaps stand and brush your teeth in the shower continuously all day is not a good idea.

Regarding the analogy, sadly not everyone has the same intellectual capacity (and that's OK, we have our strengths and weaknesses) so analogies like this are good to help everyone and wouldn't take it personally

That contamination is like from the nuclear testing in the 50's. So it's been in the environment for a half a century. If it were causing health problems, it likely would have shown up by now, and Vegas would be a huge cancer hot spot. I haven't heard of anything like that.

You mean like when almost every member of a fire department in Sunrise was diagnosed with cancer within a year of each other?

Or perhaps you mean like the fact that cancer in Southern Nevada results in more deaths than cancer in neighboring states? Report: Nev. Has Higher Cancer Rates Than Neighbors « CBS Las Vegas

Report paints bleak cancer survival rate for Nevadans | Las Vegas Review-Journal

Actually Clark County, and NV in general, are pretty average for the US.
