Good door mat will also take care of most of it.
Slightly off topic, but speaking of dust..... the amount we have here is why it's important to change your air conditioning filters regularly. I've had two HVAC techs (one is a close family friend) tell me that the cheap ones are fine, as long as you change them every 3-4 weeks. Spray them with Pledge for added effectiveness. My reminder to change them is when I get my electric bill.

I've never done that unless asked??

I usually don't wear shoes in my own home though. *shrug*

Continuing the tangent... Why would oil help a filter?

Mostly back on topic... I usually only take my shoes off at someone else's house if I'm wearing socks. In the heat I usually wear sandals. Socks in my purse?

I always remove my shoes when entering someone's house. Even if they tell me I don't have to. I always wear socks (yes, even with sandals), so it's no big deal. I don't want to track in something nasty and stain the carpet or what-have-you.

In Asian cultures, the dirtiest thing in the world is the bottom of a shoe. They have sandals that they'll slip on for inside use only. But outside shoes inside? No way.

Besides, I'm terrified that a woman in high heels might gouge my floor. Shoes off at my place. No exceptions.

Socks and sandals?!?! Please tell me I read that wrong! Big no no! Kind of like nylons and open toes shoes. I mean nylons anymore are ridiculous-- but even more so with open tied shoes!

People from California wear socks with sandals often. I was married to one. I just shook my head when he wore white socks with sandals. At least they weren't long black socks with shorts. THAT fashion offense would have been cited in the divorce papers as causation.

I had no idea. I don't have the legs to go without nylons.

None of you have right what is going on here. I have white carpeting and noticed my dogs were making a black path wherever they walked when they came inside. I not only learned to hand wash four sets of paws, I began to research the subject. Talked with the roads department when my neighborhood was being repaved. They hire a company to come in and put down a new top layer that is called "slurry." There are 3 types of slurry and I don't know about all the other communities but my community contracts for the cheapest grade of slurry for all roads and parking lots. If you were to go outside and take a heat reading over the payment, all that asphalt that is tinted as black as can be gives a heat reading 10 degrees higher then air temp. The hotter it is, the more the slurry wears off on feet and tires. We can actually tell which of our neighbors have gone away for the season, simply by driving down the street and looking to see what houses do not have their driveways messed up with black tire marks. It would be great if we could force them to use the highest grade slurry possible. If you do not have carpeting, it still messes up the grout in tile and the concrete in driveways and garage floors. Put a woman who had to clean that stuff up constantly in charge of roads and it would get rectified quickly, I'm sure.

Oh puh-leeze. And women can't wear white after Labor Day, either. Blah, blah, blah.

I am more comfortable in socks. So I wear socks. It keeps my floors cleaner. So I wear socks. I don't track dust, grit or petroleum in the house. So I don't wear shoes. I agree with the Asians. It is dumb to walk around all day and pick up feces, dirt, grime, bubblegum, pesticides, brake dust, and who knows what else and then track them into the house.

And since I'm not a drag queen, I don't care what the current fashion convention is.
