How are the police in Henderson now? I'm sorta considering moving there.

I didn't have any issues or interactions last time I was in Henderson, but still. I don't trust police anywhere (being a black male).

There certainly effective. IIRC Henderson is considered one of the safest cities in the country.

In short: over zealous.

I want to like police officers. As a teacher, I know exactly how it feels to do a thankless job for public service where hard work goes unrewarded and pay is only enough to live modestly. My best friend as a child is now a police officer. I have great respect for the job they do.

I own a townhouse. One night while my brother was getting ready for bed, he heard the door bell ring around 11pm. He didn't want to answer... because... duh. Seconds later, the front door was kicked open, and he sat in his bed shaking as he heard footsteps coming up his stairs. The door opened as a Henderson police officer pointed a gun at him ordering him to get out of the house.

Why? The neighbor in the townhouse diagonal to us had a kitchen smoke alarm go off.

That's second the day the school district thought it would be a good idea to do an "active intruder" drill, unannounced to the staff or children. A police officer dressed as a civilian ran through the hallway terrorizing children, before walking into my classroom shouting "Where's Thelma?", pretending as if he was holding a gun. Oh, Thelma was the name of the teacher across the hall from me.

I just had a police officer move into the townhouse next to mine. Within a month, he's already showing signs of being a fantastic neighbor - consistently leaving his barking dogs outside, buying two new cars that he leaves parked in front of my unit (because they won't fit in his 2 car garage or his driveway), and consistently playing music outside my bedroom window.

I'll probably put my townhouse up for sale this summer.

You should take a look at the transparency reports on their pay.

Yup. And then the teachers blood will reach a slow boil. You'd think for what the valley pays its cops, we'd have the best in the country. That is not the case in my experience. Mostly due to the leadership.

Police in part are paid not for what they do, as much as they are paid for what they might have to do.

Additionally it's one of the few jobs that people try to kill or injure you while you are just trying to do your job.

Every profession has it's bad apples, but the majority shouldn't be looked at the same as the minority. Good and bad in any profession.

Ever watch the TV show Cops? Who is the first person called when there is a crash, catastrophe, or an alligator in your back yard. Sure things get delegated to Fire, Animal control etc. after the fact, but that is after the closest responder shows up which is usually the Police. Just something to keep in mind.... After all someone has to do it.

I suspect a lot more will surface over the next weeks.

Would not at all surprise me if the Henderson cops did play outside the rules...it happens...but the existing story makes little sense. Hang on there will be more.
I have to agree with this.. First if they are trying to set up a surveillance area, why would you have VISIBLE police presence and then cause a scene by smashing in the door and taking people "hostage".. makes no sense...

Second, why would a grown man call his mommy???

Third, I only believe about 25% of what I read or hear nowadays....

And if the police didn't have a "circle the wagons" mentality about those bad apples, we could finally do something about our out-of-control police brutality problem.

Do criminals use ethnicity to game the system? Sure they do.

That doesn't excuse the very real problem of "driving while black" and selective enforcement of the law.

Thought I'd give an update on this since it seems that it completely flew over the heads of any journalists who began covering this incident years ago.

On July 3rd, 2017 the judge allowed and dismissed summary judgments in Mitchell vs. NLVPD.

He also states that the Mitchell's settled with Henderson PD prior to this ruling, when that happened, I'm not sure.

Long read but how I interpret this is that NLVPD is probably in the process of settling with the Mitchell's as well.

Both PDs acted like cowboys because Anthony Mitchell was a loudmouth who was taking pictures of the police's standoff with Mitchell's neighbor. Mitchell had flipped them off and told the police to turn off their siren.

After reading what happened, the 3rd amendment violation was never going to fly and that's why it was thrown out. The police were not interested in using Mitchell's house as a launch point against the neighbor, White. Instead the intrusion into Mitchell's house was retaliatory in nature and also to prevent him from photographing their standoff.
