Hello All, I've been reading the forum for a while and decided to do a post about my efforts to increase my security in my new house. It's in the North West side of Vegas. I like the area but I have two walls that back open empty desert, and they are fairly low. I'm not the paranoid type, but I believe it very worth while to invest into security, especially since I do leave the house some months of the year.

I think some of the best money spent on security, bang for the buck, would be

1. Alarm System - get the best you can afford
2. Home Defense Weapon - gun, stun gun, mace or something of that nature
3. Security Doors - or at least reinforcing the ones you have
4. Security Lights - motion sensor and timer activated
5. Window Security Film - I really like these films, prevents them from breaking glass easily.. think
Hurricane style glass
6. Safes - maybe this puts you "in the equation", but I think they are necessary for valuables and just about everyone has them now. You could get one obvious one, and one not so obvious.

I'd like to hear others input on how they handle their home security. If you need suggestions for companies from any of the above. just PM me, I've had very good results from all of the companies I used.

The first thing you should do is to pick a safe clean quiet neighborhood, and surroundings (be careful on corner homes with low walls, or backyard walls next to public streets...)
Second thing you should do is to not leave any valuables in the house.
I would also add that make sure your front or side ways are well-lighted at night (perhaps with motion sensered lights).

I'd put security film a bit higher - it's a low-cost, high prevention device. I had a giant panoramic entry window done for $130 including installation. If you're a DIYer even cheaper (It's about the same complexity as installing automobile window tint)

I would also add the StrikeMaster Pro II door frame reinforcer to the list.

Only about $70 online or in your local hardware store, and makes your door virtually kick-proof. Lots of videos on youtube demonstrating this.

As the saying goes, "they can't rob you if they can't get in"

Because crime is worse in the NW? I live out here and cannot substantiate your thesis. Why is the NW so bad?
