I'm fairly new to this forum, so bare with me. I'm also fairly new to Vegas; been here for 4months now. I have prior military experience, honorably discharged with no family here in vegas for support. They are all back in the South. I'm writing to share my experience with searching for employment. I'm still in the hunt for that 'dream job' that I can comfortable go into everyday and be productive in my environment.

I luckily, met a guy that I started to become friends with. He hooked me up with a part time job doing antiques/auctioning. I had no exp. in this field, but me being the DETERMINED person I am, I took the position. I've learned a lot from this job, but it doesn't have the same satisfaction as it would be if I had a more challenging job. Lifting, reaching, running, etc. etc....that's good physically, but I'm still looking for that job that requires my skill sets to prevail. I love customer service work......security. (speaking of, how do I obtain a Tamm Card?)

I am a 'people person'.......why can't I get a casino gig? BUT, THIS IS WHAT I HEARD FROM LOCALS. "It's not WHAT you know, but WHO you know.

That statement has become a plaque in my experience. you won't hiring someone on pure knowledge and skill, but knowing that the manager has a friend that may have some experience in a particular field will get the job over the 'more qualified' is something that I guess I'm gonna have to deal with. Any thoughts?
Man, just apply where you want to work...the people on here want to protect their jobs so they create a myth of how hard it is to get a casino gig...time and time again direct knowledge surfaces of people jiithout juice getting a gig by simply appyling.

the auction gig sounds pretty cool..do you know how to talk fast in a mic

protect jobs?? there are thousands employed in the casinos and we are going to worry about protecting a few jobs?? Hogwash... unless it is a entry level job in a casino (and even that tends to require vegas experience)...it is about who you know....

plus if you come to vegas and only have worked 1 job for a few months, or you just quit, odds are that you won't be called, even from my retail company...

Times are tough and us old timers in the industry would prefer to keep the good old boy system in place to insure our grand kids will be working there instead of stocking and selling in retail for minimum wage.

I've been out looking for jobs this week, I quit my job on Monday. I'm being told that they're not hiring until after the holidays. Kind of sucks BUT I do not mind having some free time finally after months of excessively long work weeks.

The first thing I would do if find all the application sites for the major and llocal's casinos (both physical and on-line) and apply for anything you're even vaguely qualified for. Do anything to get your foot in the door someplace, than work up from there. It doesn't cost you anything if you strike out, and it may get you working up the food chain.
