I think it's more a bigger, longer term trend. With internet conferencing being so cheap and easy, the concept of flying people in from all over the country (or world) and paying to put them in hotels and feeding them, is seeming pretty archaic and inefficient.

One would think that, but attendance hasn't dropped significantly. I think people prefer to interact in person. Some industries may be migrating to digital conferencing, but I don't think it's time to put a fork in conferences yet. I primarily handle legal and medical conferences and those 2 niches are actually seeing increases in attendance year over year.

We're not talking about 5-10 people on a conference call.... We're talking 50-150,000 people wanting to see touch and hear about New products, take classes and get hands on. Conferences are in no way dying out. Plus people like having an excuse to come here!

And not just here. I produce conferences nationally.. just did one a month ago for 3000 people in Huntsville, AL. Huntsville. Alabama. But non-union in the south and they could afford to put on a much better conference there.

How does Alabama do when it comes to mid-size or big conferences though?
I think Vegas kind of dominates in that range with only a few competitors like Chicago and NY.

FWIW Vegas is home to the largest building in the US....The Palazzo/Sands complex at 6.9 million square footsies.

Yes and no.

That's true if you're only measuring floor space; if you're measuring usable space by volume, there are several larger, with the largest being Boeing's factory in WA where they assemble aircraft.

Hence me specifying the squares instead of cubes.

Still it's amazing for a little watering hole in the desert!

Here's the latest on what is happening with Casino's revenue in Vegas and could explain why room rates stay low.

I think the rooms in Las Vegas are priced cheaper than comparable rooms in other major cities. I spend a lot of time on the road for work - over 100 nights in hotels so far this year. Any business class hotel is going to be $100+ a night, and usually we have to fight for a corporate rate to get anywhere near that number. It's more like $140-160 for rooms in a city with a decent tourist or convention business.
