I would go with the 12' tall bottlebush. Won't be 100% but will give you some privacy. Definitely drought resistant and fast growing if you dig a decent hole and give it plenty of fertilizer and water for a few years..

Oleanders do really well here in Clark County. Can be grown as a tree or bush for privacy and it grows fast. Just keep in mind it is a poisonous plant that can harm animals and children. Texas Ranger also thrive here in the desert.

It has been 2 yrs since I started this thread and now I'm finally ready to get the trees. It took longer than I thought to get the hardscape and sprinklers in to do this.

I went to Moon Nursery last week and the guy was recommending the bottle bush or tree which was mentioned here and also the Japanese Blueberry. I am also interested in the Magnolia tree.

What I didn't mention is that there is a pool in this area so I'm looking for bushes and trees that don't drop a lot of leaves or other things.

Anybody have any other feedback?

I'd just texture the wall and paint it, so that it doesn't look like a prison wall. You're adding more work for yourself with shrubs, no matter what you buy.

Driving around town, you can always tell who has shrubs around their privacy wall. Because the exteriors of those walls are crumbling.

Confused. If they need to buy shrubs for privacy what good will texturing a wall do?

It won't. I'm suggesting texturing instead of shrubs. From the way the thread reads, the problem is that the wall is ugly. Shrubs mean more work -- lots more with a pool. And you can always tell what walls have shrubs on the other side because they're crumbling. I wouldn't do it. Paint doesn't require much maintenance after the initial spraying.

If I have to work on a plant, I at least want fruit for my effort.

I don't recommend you plant a Japanese Blueberry tree, anywhere. My original front yard had one, and it ended up infested with wood boring beetles. My tree guy told me he did not recommend them and didn't understand why some nurseries were pushing them, because he didn't think they were suited for the area. We replaced it with a Chaste tree.

I would look into using 5 gallon non-compact Xylosma congestum spaced 5 feet apart. They will eventually grow to 8' by 8'. They are drought resistant, with no known diseases, minimum litter, non-deciduous. They can stand full sun or shade. If you are planting them in front of a reflective wall, you need tough plants. Xylosma has earned the 'bullet-proof' designation from the Southern Nevada Plant list and the SNWA plant list. They will grow reasonably fast and form a solid hedge that will be long-lived, work-free and trouble-free.
You can find them at Star Nursery at a good price. Watch for late summer sales.
You might also consider painting your wall a pleasing shade of neutral green to make it disappear and provide a calming background to the growing hedge.
