What is?

Did you come on a bad weekend?

Who knows?

If you're quite familiar with the area, why are you even asking the question?

And as far as your question about what there is to do away from the Strip, apparently you aren't as familiar with the area as you think you are.

Sounds like you would be more knowledgeable on this town than most members on here. Maybe we should be asking you for advice. Either you know the city or you don't.

Go pick up some of the local non tourist-non strip publications, flip through it, and find something that interest you. Otherwise...

For what its worth. I have personally seen the increase in the amount of violence , theft and drug activity in that area in past couple of years.

Did I just go on a bad weekend?
Who actually spends time "on" the strip?

I go to the strip to eat or catch a show with the gf a couple times a month...we park in the parking garage, walk in the casino, enjoy ourselves and leave.

Have lived here almost 3 years and still love it here.

What town do you live in that doesnt have a less than desirable element? Time Square same thing. Hollywood same thing. Picadilly Circus same thing. Champs Elysees same thing. To varying degrees of course. Maybe not the Champs Elysees.

Less than desirable element is one thing, feeling you need to carry a gun on you to be in an area is quite another. Oh and I dunno.... Portland OR, Dallas TX, Denver CO, San Francisco CA.... I can think of many cities where I didn't feel I needed to carry a gun on me due to the obvious gang activity and drug dealing crowd. Mojave is right, it has gotten worse, so it's not just my imagination.

The artist envisioned two painbrushes welcoming people to the arts district and what the city got does not even look like paintbrushes but many locals and public officials were all happy with these two "flashlights". Many people here are definitely not sophisticated, they are GHETTO!

Paintbrushes??? gee..I thought they were candles!

At the risk of feeding the troll, take a drive down Koval sometime, or wander the area around the Stratosphere late at night. Of course they're dodgy areas. They are among the worst areas in town.

Most cities don't have bad section directly adjacent to the best section. Central Park does not butt up directly against the South Bronx, for instance. It's quite a long walk from the Louvre to Pigalle.

But walk out the back of the MGM sometime, and have a look at Koval St. after a concert at the arena. I have seen hand-to-hand transactions that were certainly drugs, streetwalkers, and similar. I haven't seen violent crime, but it's most certainly there. And that's directly adjacent to the Strip. Few cities have their eyesores right next to their palaces.

There are some parts around the strip that are ghetto but certainly not ALL of it. I think if you want to live near the strip I'd say make sure you have the money to live in one of the nicer complexes(Meridian, Panorama Towers). Like every major city, one block will look unsafe and the next block over will be totally fine. As far as it "getting worse", what data are you basing these claims on? Anecdotal evidence doesn't count. The truth is, if you live in a major city it comes with some risk, but what interesting place doesn't come with some risk?

I was born and lived in Colorado/Denver almost my whole life and I'll say there are places in Denver I felt far less safe than here in LV next to the strip, even on the east side. Take a stroll down eastern Colfax or spend some time in five points and let me know how it goes for you.
