Anyone with experience with either of these carriers in Las Vegas? Want to get a family member a phone who uses mostly wifi but occasional 3G but am more concerned with dropped calls, coverage etc.

My family uses Walmart Family mobile. I have the HTC Wildfire S. I am not a heavy user of internet so I am fine with 3G. Mostly i like to listen to the radio when I walk the dog. (TuneIn radio is a great app.) Good reception, we live in Henderson. Pay $175/month for 4 phones.

I recommend MetroPCS.

I had previously been with Verizon. I paid $62/mth for 450mins and unlimited texting on a dumbphone (no internet/data).

I switched to MetroPCS. For $50/mth, I get unlimited minutes, unlimited texting, and unlimited data (2.5gb at 4g LTE speed which is about 15mbps, afterwards they optionally can throttle you to 3g speeds, but this has never happened to me ... and if it did, who cares? 0 data overage charges).

I have had exactly 0 dropped calls since switching in January.

Additionally, I got the LG Motion 4G phone for $50, which I'd say is on par with an iPhone 3gs/4. It runs Android ICS very fast and I've had 0 issues with it. (I will say the camera is not as good as iPhone, but it's still decent, and even takes HD video)

This is just my experience, others my vary. Considering there is no contract, you have nothing to lose by trying. You can switch any time you want.

I do not work or have any affiliation with MetroPCS, I just think it's a much better value than Verizon.

I was with metro pcs in CA. where the service
Works, it was fine. When I moved to the next
Town (8mi) it didn't work @ all due to proximity
To mountains. I had to go w/Verizon. It's
Expensive so I dropped the landline. I plan to
Exit the contract when it ends & not return if another
Provider w/great coverage is available.

I miss the $50 or $55/mo w/metro pcs. They
Never answered their customer support line,
At least in SoCal. Don't know about Vegas.

Verizon does have great customer support,
But it's expensive!
Even AT&T and sprint are more reasonable!

I had Sprint when we moved here and kept it for 2 years. It was fine (DH is still on it) but I wanted cheaper so I tried virgin. Phone selection wasn't bad and I expected the service would be the same.

I was wrong. The network never worked for me as well as Sprint. Last month I switched to straight talk (wal mart) using the t mobile network. So far so good, though their customer service people don't seem to know anything).

No experience with metro.

Sent from my phone please excuse to typos.

Decided to go with tmobile and so far so good. Had one small issue with Internet connectivity fixed within minutes of going back into the store. 50 dollars a month unlimited talk, text, and web. 4g speed for first 500mb then slows to 2g but continues to work with no overages. Works for us because we so heavily utilize wifi and didnt have data plan before anyway. Great reception so far where we live. Liking it so far.

Phone companies **** me off.
I started out with unlimited everything on a smart phone (first motorola Q) for 30 bucks a month. Every time I upgraded phones I paid more per month. Now I have the note 2 and I am paying 100 a month for 400 minutes, 3gb of net, and unlimited text. I've noticed no difference in service.
